"Please, ma'am, I promise to work hard. Please consider employing me," my voice echoed through the building, drawing the attention of all the customers in the shop.

I swallowed the emptiness down my throat, wondering if the woman would show some understanding and give me a chance.

"Did you have to shout like that?" the woman muttered in a low, husky voice, walking closer to me.

"Please don't shout like that again. You might scare the customers away," she said, glancing around to see if anyone was watching us.
