The next day, Kara dressed as usual, and before seven, she was going down the stairs and to the dining hall.
The four men were already seated and were waiting for her.
“Buongiorno” She greeted everyone before occupying her usual seat.
Evan, Bruno, and Frank greeted her back, but not Nico Bernadi, who was busy reading the papers.
The mood at the table was the same as before. Formal.
The food was served and the maids left.
Kara ate slowly. She tried to feel her way around her companions. They were all busy with their plates.
She cast a glance at Nico’s way, but he was not looking in her direction. He was busy talking to the other three about business.
It was a drastic change from the previous days when Nico would, from time to time, address her.
It was unnerving that after what happened with them last night, Nico did not so much as glance
Kara bit her lip to keep herself from grinning. She was Nico's girl. She liked the sound of that. She stepped out of the elevator ahead of Nico, surprised when Marco’s sweaty face greeted her. He was panting.“Is it true?” He cornered her.Fear crept into her eyes. She did not like the way he was looking at her. Before she could respond, Nico already collared Marco Bonacci, to the shock of everyone. “I told you to stay away from my girl.” He said menacingly. “I won’t. Not until Kara confirms it. You are not going to intimidate me, Bernardi.” Marco Bonacci spat out.His chest heaved heavily after running two flights of stairs to chase them. There was a desperation in his expression that alarmed Kara.Marco's reply turned Nico's face cold. “You have been warned.” And before everyone could guess what he was about to do, Nico formed his free hand into a fist and leveled a heavy blow on Marco Bonacci’s face. Marco Bonacci flew at the impact. He landed on the floor, but he was qu
Kara was all smiles as Max and Elliot fussed over her. It was her first time to receive this kind of treatment, and she was basking in the attention. First, they did her make-up.“We will keep it to a bare minimum because you do not need much, just some to highlight your facial features, especially your eyes,” Max told her. They curled the ends of her hair and let it fall around her shoulders in a swirly, spiral motion. After the hair and make-up, they pulled out several pieces of gowns from a rack for her to choose from. Her eyes scanned the dresses. “I can’t choose.” She told them, nibbling on her index finger and asking the two to decide for her. Max took out a one-shoulder flutter sleeve plum dress with a thigh-high slit. “This one would look good on you. It brings out the color of your eyes.” He told her. She pulled the dress on and was surprised at the perfect fit. The bodice hugged her torso perfectly, emphasizing the smallness of her waist. The skirt flares at th
Kara’s body was shaking when familiar arms enveloped her from behind.“Get away from me, you monster!” She cried, evading those stifling arms. She felt like retching. She remembered the last time Nico showed him how ruthlessly he dealt with people who crossed him. It was bloody!Kara squeezed her eyes shut. The image of Marco lying in a pool of blood plays in her mind.“He’s not dead. You are overacting!” Nico jolted her back to her senses.Kara slowly opened her eyes, and true enough, Marco Bonacci was not dead. “He just fainted from fear. What a coward!” He tsked, but his derogatory words did not affect Kara. Her eyes scanned his body for any trace of blood. She found none. Then, she dropped to her knees and put her index finger to his nostrils to check if he was still breathing.
“What is going on?” Kara asked Evan when the police took Nico away.“Let’s not talk here.” Evan nudged her to go in the direction of the hotel, but she did not want to leave yet. “What about Nico? Are you going to let him go like that? The Police got him. They could put him in jail!” Kara could feel the panic in her voice while she watched Nico slide into the waiting police car nearby. Her mind boggled with the thought that he did not look unconcerned that the Police arrested him.“Ms. Baxter. Go with Evan and report for work.” This time, it was Bruno who told her off.She was confused. She and Nico had just made up. They were good. Until this happens.Evan’s phone rings. She vaguely heard Evan talking while she watched the receding figure of the police car. Then, Evan thrust his phone at her.
He was kissing her like there was no tomorrow.“Nico!” Kara hissed, suddenly feeling shy when they came up for breath. She suddenly realized that what they were doing was PDA, and it was not her cup of tea.She also remembered that just a few paces away, there stood Marmie, waiting for her. Her friend must be scandalized witnessing the whole thing. She pushed Nico off her.It was a hard push, and Nico staggered back.“What’s wrong? I was just trying to assure you that I am okay. You were worried earlier. You had been crying.” He told her, baffled by the change in her.Kara shut her eyes, feeling embarrassed all over. Of all the things to mention, why does Nico have to bring that up?She remembered how she cried in relief at the sound of his voice and how she almost ran out of the hotel to look for him.Her face grew warm.
Kara held her chin up when she passed by Nico. She heard Marmie greet him, but Kara did not spare him a glance, unhappy with what he forced her to do. Kara knew he was looking at her, waiting, but she could not fake what she did not feel. They went to their assigned floor and started work. Kara fished out a key card to open a unit. “Housekeeping,” Kara called out to alert a guest of their presence. When no one answered, she signaled Marmie, and they came in. They went in opposite directions, forming a letter v. Kara went to the bed while Marmie went straight to the bathroom.Kara went to arrange the bed, picked up scattered clothes, used bathroom robes and towels, and put them in a basket. “This looks like a pigsty,” Marmie complained. Kara shushed her. “Somebody might hear you.” She said in reproach. Marmie put her hands on her hips. “Let them hear me. This place does not look like people live here. Ewww!” Marmie added, shuddering. The wiggling and the look on Marmie
“Problem in the office?’ Rebecca seemed to sense that there was something wrong with Nico. She acted quickly, placed her dessert spoon down, and dabbed her lips with the table napkin before rising to her feet. She walked to the door, passing a seemingly transfixed Nico. “Where are you going?” He managed to ask when he saw her stepping out of the private room. “To the office,” Rebecca said when he asked. Nico rubbed the back of his head, looking conflicted. He did not want to dampen their reunion lunch. For a moment, he thought of staying but knowing Kara was missing, he could not sit still and take it easy. He had to see her. Finally, he sighed and decided to leave. “You do not have to come with me back to the office." He told a seemingly offended Rebecca. He backtracked. "What I mean is, you can stay and enjoy your food. Later, I will send a car to fetch you.” He told her, but Rebecca ignored him.By the time he came to his senses, Rebecca was walking toward the exit.
Nico watched the CCTV footage from the monitor. As far as he knew, Kara had gone to the third floor to throw her necklace away. The third floor was her last stop.He requested the security personnel to show him the footage only to find out, to his annoyance, that they do not have any recordings on file that would suggest Ms. Baxter's last stop before she disappeared was the third floor. Mario was also there. His man was shaking his head, and from his body movements, Mario could glean that he wanted to say something but was reluctant because of Nico.“You can say what you want to say. The boss will listen.” He advised Pedro.Pedro hummed. He clicked on his computer and checked several clips before muttering, “I do not think Ms. Baxter ever stepped foot on the third floor.” Come Pedro’s reply. “What are you implying? Her necklace, the one with the bug, was found on the third-floor dumpster. Are you saying that Kara deliberately misled me?" Nico’s voice sounded gruff. He was angry
