Chapter 30 – Her Response
Alice tossed and turned on the bed. She tried many times to sleep but she just couldn’t. Her mind kept changing its stance. She should come up with a final answer. Maybe then, her mind would stop bothering her.
When Conrad left her unit, she did cry. Silently. Then, she realized he would still hear her sobs, no matter how much she suppresses them. She openly cried, then.
A lot of things went through her head at the same time, it gave her a little headache. It was as if there’s an unforeseen pressure from all the swirling thoughts in her mind.
As usual, there are two opposing opinions. She would like to accept his offer. She would like someone to be with her. She would like to share all the things she’s experiencing with another person. His body relaxed and she heard his sighs of relief.“Alice?” His voice was a whisper in the silent room.“Hmm, do you need anything?”The man didn’t reply and she continued to press on his back and arms. They arrived there at mid-day. They don’t know yet how long they’ll be staying, but Conrad paid enough for one week. They’ll decide then if they want to remain or to move on.It was a simple town, with more nature than houses. The nearest diner is a couple of kilometers away. She was busy cooking food in the kitchen. Conrad was cleaning up the truck. It rained early in the morning and the grounds are muddy. Still, they went out to buy supplies. In the last two days, she asked him to teach her how to drive. It was one thing they’ve been busy with, occupying their time and attention. She was nervous at first, but as she got the hang of it, she realized it’s quite easy. She navigated the roads just fine, with no incident.“It’s different in crowded cities where people can walk on the main roads to cross. That’s when you need to be very observant and careful. I prefer driving at night because there are less vehicles and I can go with maximum speed. With our vision, darkness isn’t much of a concern.”She agreed with his sentiment. She practiced for hours until she felt more confident. She enjoyed the experience of learning how to drive.That night, Alice heard him call her name urgently. She became alert and turned off the stove before moving towards the door.
