Chapter Sixteen

GYPSY'S POV

“Did you hear me, Miss Mathews?”

The detective's voice startles me. I realize that both he and Enzo are waiting for an answer.

I let out a nervous chuckle. “You see, Detective, my budget has never been able to afford rent, even in a rundown place like that.”

The detective cocks his head as if asking, so?

“I lived with a cousin of mine. She paid the rent and helped with whatever small income I had.” I quickly add.

Detective Swartz nods. “You spoke in the past tense. Does that mean you don't live with her anymore?" Swartz questions.

“No... She... Uh... She got married a few months ago."

“Which means you live alone now?” The detective asks. I nod. “I thought you said your budget has never been able to afford rent.”

“Yes. But my cousin, the guy she married is well-to-do and all. She paid half a year's worth of rent for me and my son. We've been living off of that.”

The detective leans back on the couch and nods thoughtfully. “And so this cousin of yours, what's...”
