CHAPTER 22 – HURT

After Mason all but unceremoniously announces that I do not have an iota of importance in his life, I decide to look around on my own. I wander for a while, taking in the marvelous decor of the office complex and praying I do not run into anyone I know.

I push open a door leading to an empty conference room and quickly step in to regroup and just breathe.The tall office building offers a splendid view of New York City at night. Nightlights wink and blink in the distance. It is like a gathering of fairy dusts. It completely takes my breath away.

Thud!

I spin quickly, my eyes wide.

Suddenly, cool air wafts over me, raising goosebumps from my skin. My pulse hammers against my throat and my palm becomes clammy with sweat. Someone's here.

I clench my fingers into fists, my eyes quickly darting over the length of the conference room.
