FORTY ONE

I stare at Mason, shock coursing through my veins.

I find it extremely difficult to survive five minutes alone with this man in the room. How the hell will I survive two weeks in an entire mansion alone with him?

"B-but…"

"Hush, princess. There are no buts." His gaze turns serious. "After last night, I realized this is the only way." He gets to his feet.

"Be prepared. We're leaving in a few hours."

"What exactly happened last night?" I ask quietly.

Mason pauses, then he turns slowly in my direction. His steely gaze holds mine. It is a real struggle not to look away, or lower my eyes in fear.

"What did you say?"

I shrug, trying to appear nonchalant.

"I do not think anything happened last night, or if it did, I do not remember."

Something dangerous flashes in those gray depths, just before he shuts his eyes. When he opens them a moment later, they are calm. Unnervingly so.
