18. The Woman

Beatrice sighed as she looked at the mansion. This will be her new home starting today. And it doesn’t feel right for her.

“Madam. Let’s go to your room now,” Jen said.

Beatrice nodded and they walked inside. She saw again the big painting of a woman at the top of the big stairs. She stopped when she was just below it. The woman really looked like her.

“Jen. Do you know her?” she asked.

Jen went to Beatrice’s side. “No, madam. I am new here. But I know that she was the former madam of this house.”

Beatrice frowned. “Old madam? You mean she was Mateo’s wife too?” She looked at her servant. Jen nodded at her. She looked at the painting again. She never knew that Mateo was married already. “Do you know where she is now?”

“I heard she was already dead.”

“Oh.” Now she was interested. “Jen. Can you do me a favor?”

Jen smiled and bowed. “Anything you asked, madam.”

“Thank you. Can you find out more about her for me?”

Jen looked at the painting. She was a new servant in this mansion
