Chapter 41

David stood up from his desk, zipped up his briefcase, and cast a gloomy gaze around the room. He could have sat at home and done nothing and yet accomplished as much as he did today. But just where was "home"? Anywhere his lovely wife was… He had grown to actively hate the Los Angeles flat because it had slowly dawned on him that, while Anna was there, she hadn't made the least attempt to impose her personality on the property. She had not included any visuals or floral accents. The flat was as stark as Bryan had originally suggested—nothing at all like the comfortable abode Anna had enjoyed with her first husband.

David sighed. His birthday was rather disappointing compared to others. He had been in a foul mood ever since he had asked Anna to accompany him this morning, and she had refused him outright and pointed out that doing so was not part of their agreement. He had believed Anna had gotten used to the circumstances of their marriage, but apparently, she hadn't.
