I dialed her number again, and this time she answered. "Thank God," I muttered, feeling relieved.

"How are you, Mum?" I asked.

"Oh, my daughter, I am fine," she replied, and I closed my eyes, taking a breath of relief.

"I hope you haven't been having any troubles at all?" I inquired.

"Not at all, Laura," she replied. "Has someone come to see me? Are you finally ready to settle down?" she teased.

"Oh, come off it, Mum. You know I recently broke up with Santos, so it will take a while for me to find someone."

"That's true," she sighed. "When are you coming to visit me?"

"I am quite busy at the moment, Mum, but I will come as soon as I can, hopefully before the year ends," I assured her. She fell silent for a moment before responding.

"That's fine, Laura. Just don't let it take too long. I miss you."

"I miss you too, Mum."

"Okay, bye," she said before hanging up the call. Normally, I made sure to visit my mum at least three times every year, but this year, I had only gone to see her once
