CHAPTER 43

My skull felt like it was being hammered away as a throbbing agony slowly returned and consciousness slowly returned to my mind. I struggled to see my surroundings as I blinked against the faint light that was slowly permeating the space. Beside me, Audrina was staring at my face with concern.

"James!" I was dragged out of the fog of slumber by her voice, which was a mixture of worry and relief. I had a hard time lifting myself up since my body hurt every time I moved. I sat up against the headboard, and Audrina rushed to my side to lend her support.

"For how long was I out?" With a scratchy and dry throat, I rasped. Audrina wiped a strand of hair out of her face, her brow furrowed in concern. "Just a few hours," she said, seeming a little relieved. "I was starting to worry."

My sweet girl.

All those times that I was without her, it felt like my life had no color, and then the realization dawned on me that I was standing between life and death.
