“I never went to school. I was homeschooled,” I tell Adrian and Brittany, after he tells me about the man claiming to be an old classmate of mine.

“That’s what I said. Dude left soon after that.”

“You didn’t get his name?” Brittany asked.

Adrian shook his head, “No. He told me not to worry about it and left. He was driving some junky green Saturn with California license plates. Said he was heading to Oregon, but drove in the opposite direction.”

“That’s weird,” Brittany said, picking Pickles up off the ground, cuddling the kitten in her lap.

“Very few people from back home know I live here. My lawyer and a handful of my parents' nosy friends. I mean, it was a small town so everyone knows everything about everybody. I never posted anything about moving on social media, though. I’m sure people still think that I’m in San Francisco. Everyone except my lawyer, who helps manage my parent’s estate.”

“Would your lawyer tell anyone?”

I thought for a few seconds, “I don’t think he would. He’
