47: FREAKSTORM

PEBBLES' POV

White-hot lightning flashed through the blackening sky, followed by the smashing sound of thunder. The pitter-pattering of the rain was like drumbeats on the roof of the car. I couldn't see the road outside as curtains of water covered the windows.

“It's getting terrible outside,” the chauffeur mumbled shakily, and then the car halted. “We're here,” he announced.” Let me take you to the door,” he grabbed his umbrella.

My eyes darted to his feet. I noticed earlier that he had a wooden leg. I couldn't trouble him. He still had to drive back to his workplace and then his home.

“Thanks, but I'm only seconds from the front door. Now you be careful out there.”

“I will. I saw an inn two minutes down the road. I will rest there until this storm pasts.”

I fished my keys from my purse, and I bolted for the door. Torrential rain poured down in icy sheets like needles pricking my face. I hastily opened the door and jumped inside. My fingers trembled and my body shivered. I hugged my
