He felt even more like a failure when he drove away from the academy without Ember. He had failed her as a guardian if she had felt that she couldn’t be herself around him or tell him everything that had been done to her. He hadn’t even known that some of the pups had bullied her.
When he pulled to a stop in front of the pack house, there was a welcoming party waiting for Ember. Most of the household and garden staff, some guards were waiting, as well as Ilene and even Tom. There was a measure of excitement in their patience and he felt horrible, when he stepped out of the car alone and their faces fell at the realization that Ember was not with him.
