53 - Carmen's Backstory (2)
Carmen tried to open her eyes, but it was dark. Something was blocking her view. When she tried to move her arms and legs, they were immobile. ‘Mommy? Daddy?’ she called out.
‘Hey, she’s awake. Go see what she wants,’ she heard someone say.
‘So you’re smart, right? If you behave while we wait for your parents to give us the money, we will give you back to them,’ a male voice said. ‘Don’t bother running away, or I will hurt you.’
When they removed the covering for her eyes, all she could see was the man’s face covered in a black mask, showing only his eyes and his mouth. What she couldn’t forget was that he had these big, scary, dark brown eyes that glared at her.

Clara’s door had been left wide open the night before. Outside, she and Baz could hear that Jere had turned on the TV to cartoons while Max was busily banging pots and pans, pretending to make breakfast. She didn’t want to come out and leave the comfort of Sebastian’s arms. Tomorrow, he won’t be there, so she’d be waking up alone, and she did not want to think about it. Was Clara getting used to being with him? He was still asleep, and she took this opportunity to stare at him. Clara touched his lower lip with her thumb, then followed it with her lips. She planned to wake him up so they could kiss again. ‘Okay, fine, I’m scared. What if I’m not what you expect? What if I don’t know what I’m doing?’ Clara said cryptically. ‘How am I going to tell him I’m bad at relationships, maybe even sex? Wasn’t that the reason all my exes left me? I couldn’t satisfy their needs. What if I forgot how to do it? I can’t learn that on the internet, right, or maybe I could?’ Clara thought as her mind raced, finding reasons to push him away. ‘What do you mean? In terms of relationships? Clara asks for a meeting Monday morning with all the technicians available on hand, Max and Jeremy with their assistants, together with Eli, her PA, filling up the meeting room. She talked about how the final installation for Navio International has been moved to an earlier date. ‘A month from today’s date when we can have all the equipment ready and all the staff available. We will need six technicians to change all the cameras and prepare the wiring for the new system unless you guys think we need more. As Heather took her seat in front of Jeremy’s office, she contemplated her relationship with Clara. That remark about being there for her graduation really meant a lot to her. Sure, they’ve known each other for ten years now, ever since Heather was in high school, but aside from the night she crashed at their place, they’ve never talked about anything else. It was Friday morning when Sebastian got the call. One of the shipping vessels was on fire. An accident, they said, but the explosion made him suspect foul play, so he had to investigate what had happened. ‘They built those crates to withstand fire,’ he thought to himself. ‘What was in them that set that explosion anyway?’ he questioned while watching the security tapes they got from the ship and on the dock. The next time Clara heard from Sebastian was when he was on the news addressing the media and everyone else who got hurt. They were still pulling out survivors by the time her plane took off. She texted him, asking him where he was because she wanted to be sure that he would be at the office when her plane landed. She didn’t really know where his house was, so that would have been a disaster if she had to ask him for directions. But she took Lexi’s cell just in case she needed to ask for it later. ‘Do you want to order food so we can just have it here?’ Clara asks after they stop kissing. Her tummy has been grumbling since he went running after his dad. ‘I forgot to eat lunch because I was so nervous trying to get here.’ ‘Of course, let’s go to Lexi’s desk. He has all the menus. Tell me, why did you feel that way? Were you nervous about seeing my handsome face?’ he said teasingly. She laughed and swatted his arm. ‘I don’t know. What if you didn’t want me here?’ she says, then curses. When he asks her why, Clara tells him that she forgot to book a place for the night. ‘You can always stay with me, you know that right?’ he says, and her heart drops. ‘Does it mean that he wants us to sleep together? Is tonight the night?’ she turned pale and tried to avert her gaze.
