Jake's POV

My mother wasn't picking up her calls. When I reached the house, I instructed the security not to announce my arrival. I spotted some reporters lurking around, but thankfully, they didn't recognize me.

"Do they think I'm stupid for driving my own car home?" I muttered under my breath.

The company grounds were clear of reporters, so I parked my car there and hurried inside, calling for my mother. Had she gone to the hospital without me?

A quick scan of the living room revealed a hunched figure in a chair. "Mom?" I called out, approaching cautiously. It was her, the familiar scent of her perfume confirming it. She looked utterly defeated, dark circles hanging beneath her eyes.

"Jake? Is that you?" she asked, scrambling upright as I knelt beside her. She cupped my face, examining me intently.

"How'd you know it was me?" she inquired, surprised I could identify her.

I sighed, placing a hand on her knee. "Your perfume," I replied simply.
