Chapter 56 - Empathy

Breakfast was served, and I found myself already sitting and eating before Leo and Lora came down to join me. Lora's complaint echoed in the room as she took her seat, followed closely by Leo.

"Jeez, you could have waited for us before eating?" Lora protested her annoyance evident.

Without raising my head, I replied to her, my voice calm, "Oh, sorry, I totally forgot. I had visitors." With a forced smile, I added, "I didn’t actually invite you over so…"

"It is only natural," remarked Uncle Leo in a humble tone, his voice filled with grace. "We are grateful for your hospitality," he added, expressing his polite appreciation, which stood in stark contrast to Lora's annoyance. The room appeared to vibrate with tension, as if every word and gesture carried the burden of unspoken emotions. As we gathered around the table, an undercurrent of unease subtly permeated the atmosphere.
