CHAPTER 36: A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
Stripping out of her sleeved shirt, Kali used her leg to kick the apartment door shut. She caught a flash of movement at the side of her eyes and jumped, yelping in panic. Ember did the same, jumping back and jostling the box she held before dropping it. They laughed, Ember from amusement and Kali from anxiety.
"Why did you scream?" Ember throatily laughed.
"Sorry, I saw a flash and forgot someone else was here with me."
"That happens." Ember looked down at Kali's hands. "What did you go to the car for?"

“Are you ready?” “Just a minute.” Kali strutted to the mirror, turning her head to get a clear view of her ear while she struggled to fit the earring pin through. “I don’t know why it’s giving me problems today. I am seriously thinking of investing in magnetic earrings.” “Here, let me.” He brushed her fingers away and pulled her closer. He looped the first earring and helped her with the second. She thanked him, then adjusted her hair before grabbing her purse. This was the third dinner she had been to in two weeks, and there were more planned down the line. Thanks to Ember, her master, Kali thought with a smile, she knew how to prepare ahead. All her outfits were sent to the cleaners, stashed in bags and hung in the wardrobe. Then she picked out what shoes she needed and all the jewellery she planned to put on and set them aside. Christen walked into her house, grateful to step out of her heels after spending hours on her feet at Daniel’s house. The soles of her feet were sore from being stuffed in her heels for so long. The dinner had been eventful, so much time was spent interacting with guests and family members. It felt like she had been standing for ages.It didn't usually bother her, but her mood was greatly affected by the pity she felt for her friend. Seeing Samuel at the party was what Flora needed to get over him. He was happily married, and his wife hung on his every word. She supported him and seemed enamoured by him. When Samuel arrived at the house late in the afternoon, Kali was holed up in the kitchen preparing the meal she wanted to serve that evening. She was used to cooking by herself, and Samuel couldn't deny that she was an exemplary cook. The house smelt savoury, even from the door. The rich aroma of spices saturated every crevice of the room. He liked everything she made and was even getting used to her more spicy numbers. He watched for some time, and she didn't notice. She was intensely focused on her work, chopping and sorting the things she needed. Her hair was tied up with a multi-coloured scrunchy, but a good amount still swayed around as she moved. "Have you tried calling her?" "I am about to. I'll call you back, alright?" "Okay." He scrolled through his contacts for her number. The phone rang, but she didn't answer. He tried a second time, and she answered the call. He could hear the sounds of the airport from her end; the announcements, the crowded charter and the scratching of tires on the tile floor. "Brother-in-law." "June, hello. Where are you?" “Samuel?” He turned with the placard still above his head and spotted June running past the crowds of people to get to him. “Samuel, it is you.”

Kali looked at her phone as she stood by the door of the car, waiting for Samuel to bring down the last of their boxes. She had received a message from Ysabel which, in no small words, demanded that she come to the mansion as soon as possible because they had something important to discuss. The message was curt and straightforward, as all her messages were, but Kali sensed something more brewing. Samuel walked into the house, immediately hit by a plethora of aromas. It had been barely three hours since he left Kali to go to the office. He didn’t know how long she spent at the mansion, but she must have kept busy in the kitchen after her return. He left his coat on the armchair, along with his keys and satchel, before following the scent of spices to the dining room.One glance told him all he needed to know. She didn't cook. She had ordered a variety of foods, comfort and otherwise. Two pizza boxes were sitting in front of her with paper boxes filled with stir-fried noodles and some with rice. She had chicken legs, a large box of fries, and a bottle of champagne that she had already opened and was halfway through. He wasn’t sure how her digestive system was meant to process everything on the table.
