CHAPTER SIXTEEN: PAYING THE PRICE.

His feeble hands moved slowly without direction, he was trying to feel himself, to feel his body, something to hold onto as proof of his existence. His head shook to the sides as he woke, squinting at the bright light overhead.

Someone was rubbing something cool at the center of his head, but that could not stop the terrible pounding in his head. He flinched and turned his head, where was he? And why were the walls so bright?

Pain moved swiftly between his temples, blinding his thoughts. The bleached smell of the sheets turned his stomach as he stared into the face of the young nurse who also gazed at him in amazement.

"Mr. Lucas, you're awake, how are you feeling?" She probed.

Lucas averted his eyes, slightly annoyed by the question. How was he supposed to feel when every cell in his body screamed of destitution and pain?

"What is this place, and why am I here?" He asked instead.

"You're in a hospital, don't you remember anything?"

"What am I doing in a hospital?*
