CHAPTER 28: BUSTED

Meredith's POV

A screech leaves my lips, and I jump back when an old man suddenly appears by my side. He might as well be the oldest man I have ever come across since I arrived here.

His hair is completely gray, and the lines on his face suggest that he has been scowling for years. His glasses hang loosely on the bridge of his nose, and his faded, icy eyes pin me down with a glare.

Plastering one of my sweetest smiles, I say, “Hello, my name is Meredith. I am looking for a book about-“

“Not here,” he interrupts.

“But you didn’t let me say what book I was looking for,” I pouted.

“It doesn’t matter. Commoners are not allowed in this library,” he says coldly, and I think of a way to convince him to let me get at least one book.

There are over a million of them in here, and I am sure it would not kill him if he got just one.

“Please, it is urgent information, and I couldn’t find it in the other library-“

“Madam,” he cuts me off once again, his tone a lot more stern. “I am sorry, but the
