MARCH 21, 2013. | 2:58pm —

INTCARLTON BLACK PREPARATORY. CLASSROOMDAY.

HALO hangs up his smartphone, glancing at Gael who watches him from across his desk. The boy raises both eyebrows, and Halo sighs with a smile.

Halo Noel:

It seems your father has a couple of errands to run.

Gael Slater:

Does this mean you and I get to hang out longer?

The boy perks up at the possibilities and Halo is helpless in smiling.

Halo Noel:

It seems so. What shall we do?

Gael Slater:

I would pick ice cream, but my dad doesn't let me have dairy on school nights.

Halo Noel:

Darn it. Does that mean no pizza?

He stands and gathers his attaché bag, and Gael hops from his seat. Halo takes the bag, and beckons the boy ahead of him, watching him skip happily.

After a short ride across town, they walk into the Dupont Groves Zoo. Locals and tourists move back and forth, caring for their own affairs. Other Children play, dispersed across the vast stretch with benches, food and prize kiosks set smack in the centre. An air of innocence surrounds the place, with no expectations of spoil and a vibe that Halo feels drawn to.

Gael's eyes are wide in wonder as he takes in the domed ceiling. Inches of reinforced glass buried meters below the sea displays a diverse, opulent show of a live coral reef. Unbothered by the management facility, and the dome that glistens a deep blue. Marine wildlife moves about garnering the attention of many that marvel at it.

Halo Noel:

It's... beautiful.

Halo's eyes shine and glisten, but he looks down to see Gael taking a picture with his own smartphone.

Gael Slater:

Ugh! I gotta get a better camera. This android makes everything look like civil war footage.

Halo Noel:

Perhaps we should pay a visit to the penguins.

Gael Slater:

I've been dying to feed a southern rockhopper.

Halo chuckles and Gael pouts as he puts his phone away. Halo looks around at the activities around him. To his far left, a figure dressed in a fluffy dolphin costume dips to his knee. The flash of his modern polaroid goes off, and the mascot stands to approach the family of four. Halo taps Gael's left shoulder and the boy looks up at him.

Halo Noel:

Think they will take a picture of you looking up at the dome?

Gael Slater:

Awesome. They have a modern SX-70!

The boy dashes off and Halo quickly follows behind. Using his hidden skills to keep track of the boy through the crowd. Gael reaches the fluffy dolphin, animatedly spewing out orders to them.

Halo keeps his distance, but Gael turns and smiles. Waving him over with a big grin. Halo points at himself, and Gael nods vigorously. He chuckles nervously, then walks over only to be greeted by an exuberant wave from the mascot.

Halo Noel:

Oh! Hello. You're certainly bubbly for a person of few words.

Gael Slater:

I think they're taking the dolphins don't talk part of their role seriously.

The dolphin mimes a laugh and throws his head back, and waves Gael off dramatically. He then steps back, and his arm presents the entire space with a flourish. Halo looks down at Gael expectantly.

Halo Noel:

How shall we do this?

Gael Slater:

I told them to make it look like I'm touching the dome, but I'm too short.

Gael scrunches you his face, and Halo grins then gets into a crouch. Gael raises an eyebrow, but Halo dips and glances up at him.

Halo Noel:

Well? Hop on, laddy. You are not getting younger, and neither are you gaining less weight.

Gael giggles and carefully hops onto Halo's shoulders. Holding his legs for support, Halo stands and Gael laughs and hugs his head.

Gael Slater:

This is so cool!

He looks up to the ceiling, distracted by its beauty. Halo looks up as well, entranced by it just the same. The dolphin steps back, crouching to his knee to snap the photo just as Gael reaches upward with his right hand.

MARCH 21, 2013. | 3:15pm —

INTBOSTON POLICE DIVISIONINTERROGATION ROOMDAY.

Nathan Moya:

And you're sure Chuck didn't say anything else about the drive or what was on it?

Lucian shakes his head, glancing between Nathan Moya and his partner. A young, studious redhead, seemingly cut from a different cloth in his spiffy, black suit. He watches Lucian, ignoring the file before him which Nathan scours over a duplicate of.

They all sit in the small, clean interrogation room, which does its job of keeping Lucian nervous.

Lucian Slater:

To be honest, Chuck is always... vague when he's getting into trouble. He tries to keep me out of it most of the time, but I always end up right in the middle.

Lucian sighs and leans back.

Lucian Slater:

I also don't think he would just... kill somebody. He's adventurous, but not homicidal.

Jeremiah Kane:

Mr Slater. Why did you turn down the job Ms Larson was offering? It could have put a considerable dent in your debt for your business.

Lucian shrugs.

Lucian Slater:

There were bullet holes. It seemed like something I didn't want to be involved with, so I loaded it up back in her truck later during the day. Nearly a week later, she's back in my office accusing me of stealing whatever she was trying to get out.

He throws his arms up in gesture, watching them fall atop the table with a shake of his head. He glances back up at the men and straightens his composure.

Nathan Moya:

And you had no clue that Lucas Chuck took it?

Lucian Slater:

I told you-.

Jeremiah Kane:

Where were you between eight pm, and four am last night?

Lucian Slater:

After trying to get Chuck to tell me what was going on-.

Nathan Moya:

Yeah, you did say saw Lucas Chuck last night.

Lucian scoffs.

Lucian Slater:

Well, yeah. He's the only reason I was even out of the house that late last night. Earlier, I went out with my son to this art showcase his teacher was hosting, then we got home around seven, that's when Chuck showed up after about a week of not showing up to work.

Nathan Moya:

Any other correspondence with him?

Lucian Slater:

I went to see his mother a few days ago, and some... car sped off when I walked out. Just then, Chuck sent me a message, and I didn't hear from him till last night.

Nathan Moya:

What happened after that?

Lucian Slater:

After, we went out, because I thought it wasn't smart to keep him at the house. We went to The Tipsy Cactus. He got some message on his phone that he didn't share, because before he could even tell me anything else, he was out of there.

Jeremiah glances over at Nathan, both sharing a look.

Lucian Slater:

Wait. Is Chuck being looked at for this?

Jeremiah Kane:

We have a vested interest in his involvement, I am certain you know we cannot disclose any more information. You can however help us.

Nathan Moya:

With anything you know.

Lucian Slater:

I don't know what to tell you.

Nathan Moya:

And where did you go after Lucas Chuck left the bar?

Lucian Slater:

I... had a drink with someone I met at the bar. I don't think I got his name, but he seemed to know the bartender there. Might've been his brother. They had this brotherly banter thing going on.

Lucian nods between them.

Lucian Slater:

If I'm a suspect, I'm sure somebody can place me at that bar until ten. Even correspondence with my babysitter, and cellphone towers. I don't go anywhere without my phone, so I'm pretty sure if you checked it and my truck's GPS. You can triangulate and track the signals since Slater's has its own system, which is installed in my van.

He looks between the two detectives, noticing matching black rings on their fingers. He chuckles lightly and Nathan notices then smiles over at Jeremiah.

Nathan Moya:

You're right, so, that's what we'll do. We have to check your alibi before you are released, but should be cut and dry.

Jeremiah Kane:

For now.

— After the interrogation, and confirmation of Lucian's whereabouts, Lucian returns home to find it empty. Though, clues of Gael's evening are left for him to find the second he walks in. So, he travels to the Zoo, a mess of nerves.

As he steps inside the dome, he searches the room, spotting Halo and Gael almost instantly. He stops to glance at them as the mascot snaps a photo, but he takes in the way Gael shines. How he laughs out in glee when Halo hoists him atop his shoulders.

Halo Noel (In Distance):

Oh, sorry, we weren't ready yet.

The mascot mimics a laugh again in silence. Gael giggles and Halo is helpless in laughing as he effortlessly swings the boy from his shoulder, but another flash goes off. Halo looks up to see the dolphin carefully pluck the second picture from the camera. They walk over and hand Gael the pictures.

The first, captures a glint of the sunlight from the surface, just above Gael's nest of hair. The second, is them laughing as Gael is swung from Halo's shoulder.

Gael Slater:

This one looks so cool. You are super photogenic Mr Noel.

Halo takes in the picture. Appreciating the wonder in Gael's eyes, and the colours cast by the sea and the lights.

Halo Noel:

Oh, those are-.

He is interrupted by his phone going off. He answers the second he sees Lucian's name.

Halo Noel:

Mr Slater. My apologies. I and Gael are currently at the aquarium. We will be at the house in a matter of-.

Lucian Slater

(On Phone):

I... need another favour.

Halo doubles back, but he composes himself when he sees Gael looking up at him.

Halo Noel:

Is there something the matter, Mr Slater?

Lucian Slater (On Phone):

No, I... am stuck between saying thank you on the phone...

Halo narrows his gaze, but he hears Lucian behind him. Echoing in the phone.

Lucian Slater:

... but I think it's better to say it in person. Got any ideas?

He turns to see Lucian grinning at him with eyes that glisten in mischief and curiosity.

Halo Noel:

Mr Slater? What-.

Gael Slater:

Daddy!

The boy bounds up to his father, and Lucian hoists him into his arms. Peppering his face with kisses, even as Gael squirms and giggles for him to stop.

Lucian Slater:

Hey, bud.

Gael Slater:

How did you know we were here?

Lucian Slater:

Well, you have been talking about taking Mr Noel to see this place. Plus, you left a map. I didn't have to sleuth like a detective to find you.

His gaze sweeps to Halo, who blushes fiercely and averts his gaze.

Gael Slater:

That's half the fun, but Mr Noel really liked it.

Gael nods, and Halo smiles as he waves the boy off and moves up to them.

Halo Noel:

I will not argue with that assessment, laddy.

He smoothes Gael's hair back, conscious that Lucian watches him. Eyes focused on his face, and the laugh he shares with Gael. The boy beams, and hugs his father as the man holds him up. Creating a display most see as picture-perfect, even in light of their disposition and tension.

Lucian places Gael down and takes his hand into his.

Lucian Slater:

So, are you guys having fun?

Gael Slater:

Yeah, we took pictures!

Gael procures the photos and hands them to Lucian. He smiles as he takes them, eyes glazing over them, but sudden emotion cloud his gaze. Making him misty-eyed upon seeing Gael and the man glancing up at the ceiling.

Lucian Slater:

These are great, buddy. Where'd you find a Polaroid?

Gael Slater:

A dolphin!

Lucian chuckles and pulls Gael into his side for a brief hug. Gael remains pinned to his side, and Lucian holds up the pictures as he grins at Halo.

Lucian looks back at the photos. The second one makes him chuckle then shakes his head, eyes twinkling with something unreadable. Even their smiles are the same. Vibrant, almost too perfect for words even with Halo's more mature features.

Halo Noel:

I... should go now.

Gael Slater:

Aw! No, you have to stay.

Gael nudges his father and glances up at him.

Gael Slater (Whispering):

Invite him to dinner!

Lucian's eyes widen and he glances back up at Halo, but he is distracted by Gael. They make eye contact, frozen in an awkward staring contest.

Halo Noel:

You don't-.

Lucian Slater:

Will you have dinner with us?

Halo stares at Lucian for a moment, but he shakes his head. Deciding not to impose any longer.

— Watching Lucian yield to Gael, and not his own need to invite him.

Halo Noel:

I really have to go. I will see you in school tomorrow, Gael.

Before Lucian or Gael can protest, Halo turns and moves through the crowd. Disappearing through the sea of people. Gael glances up at his father with a disappointed look.

Lucian Slater:

What? He said he had to go.

Gael Slater:

Rule number one, dad. If you want something, you gotta mean it.

Lucian narrows his gaze, but Gael shakes his head.

Gael Slater:

Mr Noel is smarter than me, and I could tell that you didn't want to invite him.

Lucian Slater:

That's a little unfair, Gael. You sprung that invite on him.

Gael Slater:

Yes, because I actually want him to come to have dinner with us.

Lucian Slater:

Gael-.

Gael Slater:

I get it, dad. Let's just... go home. I'm tired again.

Gael yawns, then moves off, forcing Lucian to hurry after him. Filled up with dispassion from every decision he'd made in the past two minutes.

MARCH 21, 2013. | 3:56pm —

EXTBOSTON MARINE OBSERVATORY. PARKING LOTNIGHT.

HALO's phone chimes as he steps up to his Mercedes E-Class. He fishes the phone out, checking the notifications on the screen. He dismisses it and pauses to let out a sigh.

From behind, two police officers approach—a man and woman, both in their late twenties. The man unhooks his radio as the woman glances at Halo. Their eyes are pensive and judgmental.

Policeman:

This is Officer Blake. What's the description of our Old Navy perp?

Dispatch:

This is Dispatch, confirming the description of the perp. Black, wearing a white shirt, short afro, and he is said to be wearing white shoes.

The Policewoman nods at her partner, nudging her head towards Halo.

Officer Blake Logan:

Possible location on our perp. Standby for further notification.

The officer then moves towards Halo, just as he fiddles with his keys. A nervous wreck after his face-to-face with Lucian Slater.

Officer Mallory Kase:

Sir? Turn around, hands above your head.

Halo stays in place and raises his hands to reveal his phone and keys that jangle loudly. He turns, facing them with a blank expression.

Halo Noel:

Let me guess.

He looks between both officers.

Halo Noel:

fit the description of a suspect.

Officer Kase glances at her partner, but she keeps her gun raised. Barrel pointed at him.

Officer Blake Logan:

Do you have any concealed weapons on you?

Halo Noel:

No, but there's a few in the car. My name is Halo Noel, Director of Operations at the Arlan Guard.

Officer Blake bobs his head at his partner, who moves forward.

Halo Noel:

What am I being detained for, Officer?

Officer Mallory Kase:

Sir, I am going to search you now.

Halo nods and the woman moves toward him carefully. She pats him down thoroughly, then passes a glance to her partner before moving towards the car.

Officer Logan Blake:

Are you licensed to carry, sir?

Halo Noel:

Oh, you have no idea, Officer. Feel free to search the car. You will find an FN-509 in the glove compartment along with my credentials, a Glock G19X right side of the driver's seat. There is also an MR920 in the driver's door, a Sig Sauer below the seat, and there is a shotgun. Hidden compartment, centre-fold of the backseat.

He watches the policeman's face blanch at the mention of the weapons. His partner enters the vehicle, searching and finding each weapon after seconds of searching.

Officer Logan Blake:

I'm placing you under arrest.

Halo Noel:

Are you?

The man's gaze narrows and Halo inclines his head in question.

Officer Mallory Kase:

Yeah, they're all in here, Officer Blake.

Officer Logan Blake:

What about his credentials?

His partner shrugs.

Officer Mallory Kase:

It's just the guns.

Halo Noel:

That is ridic-. Bloody hell, that was my work car.

Officer Blake rolls his eyes.

Officer Logan Blake:

I'm sure. Cuff him.

He pulls out his radio, and Halo raises an eyebrow.

Halo Noel:

You might want to check the license for those weapons.

Pandemonium strikes, then Officer Blake jerks the gun towards Halo.

Lucian exits the zoo into the parking lot, noticing the commotion at once. Blind rage fills him when he sees Halo, arms raised and Officer Blake pointing his gun at him.

Lucian Slater:

What the hell...

Gael Slater:

Dad? Why are they pointing a gun at Mr Noel?

The boys glances up at his father, seeing nothing but bitterness in his eyes.

Lucian Slater:

This is America, buddy. C'mon. Let's go make sure they don't shoot your unarmed teacher just because he looks like you.

Lucian shakes his head and checks each side of the street separating the building from the parking lot. He crosses, long legs with indignant steps that force Gael to skip in order to keep up.

Lucian Slater:

Officer, what's going on?

Lucian carefully approaches, but he stops when Officer Kase points his gun at him.

Officer Mallory Kase:

This is patrol 2-26 at the Boston Zoo. The suspect is being placed in custody, send backup to our location. Things are escalating. Sir, stay where you are!

Lucian Slater:

What the hell is going on here?

Officer Logan Blake:

Sir, step aside. I won't ask a second time.

Officer Logan Blake:

Hands up, sir!

He jerks the gun again, and Lucian raises his arms. Gael takes off.

Lucian Slater:

Gael!

Almost as if he travels at the speed of light, Gael is standing before Halo as the officers get even more wound up before they can blink.

Halo pulls the boy behind him, but Office Blake steps closer, and his partner makes to approach Lucian, but she glances back at the guns in the car.

Halo Noel:

Gael, please go back to your father.

Gael ignored his prompt and Halo whirls on Officer Blake.

Halo Noel:

You are pointing a gun at a child, Officer Blake, so I ask again; What am I being detained for?

He reads the man's engraved name tag.

Officer Kase jerks the gun towards Lucian, who pauses, both hands raised. A small crowd gathers, some pulling out their phones as others converse collectively.

Officer Mallory Kase:

Stay where you are, do not come any closer.

Halo maintains an air of calm, free arm raised at Officer Logan. In a show of desperate strength, Officer Kase moves toward Halo.

Halo Noel:

Officer, I am in cuffs. This child is not a threat to you, so I would advise putting that gun away. You can detain me if you want, but I would rather that than have you traumatize this child further.

Officer Blake Logan:

You let me be the judge of that.

He unhooks his radio, and dials in.

Officer Blake Logan:

Dispatch, where is my backup?

Lucian Slater:

Are you kidding me? There's two of you, pointing a gun at him and a kid. You're telling me you haven't fucking deduced that they aren't a threat by the terrified look in his eyes?

Gael Slater:

Leave him alone!

Officer Blake Logan:

Sir, tell your son to step back. Young man-.

Lucian Slater:

Gael, please... just step away and let these officers do their job.

Halo Noel:

No need. This will all be cleared up in a matter of seconds.

Halo glances to his right, where Calum approaches, shaking his head.

Calum Beauchamp:

Officers.

He flashes his badge, and Gael raises an eyebrow then looks up at Halo, who smirks at him.

Calum Beauchamp:

My name is Calum Beauchamp, Arlan Guard. Do you mind telling me why you have my boss in handcuffs?

Officer Mallory Kase:

Enough of this.

Officer Kase approaches Halo, and chucks Gael to the side, ignoring him when he cries out and falls backward. Halo rolls his eyes, dislodges the woman's gun before she can blink. Her partner notices, and turns, but Calum is upon him, effortlessly slipping the gun from his hand.

Calum Beauchamp:

You're not shooting anybody today, Officer Logan.

Officer Kase blinks as Halo pulls the gun apart, drops it on the ground, and runs over to Gael.

Halo Noel:

Gael!

He crouches, gathering the boy into his arms. Lucian breaks away from the officer and runs over to crouch on the ground beside them.

Lucian Slater:

Hey, buddy. Are you ok?

Gael pulls away, grinning at his father as his arm drapes over Halo's shoulder.

Gael Slater:

I'm ok, daddy. So is Mr Noel!

He hugs both men to him, pulling everyone's attention as they become a mess of tangled arms, relieved laughs, and smiles.

Halo Noel:

Do not ever do anything like that again, do you hear me, young man?

He states, determined as he admonishes Gael when the boy pulls away, but his stern face calms as Gael pouts. He nods and looks at Lucian who shakes his head.

Lucian Slater:

You could have gotten hurt, buddy.

Halo Noel:

I was ok. You did not have to jump in.

Halo smoothes the boy's hair back, hugging him again as Lucian slinks back, observing the man's obvious love and connection with Gael. They all rise, noticing eyes on them as Calum and a team of deftly dressed guards appear to push the crowd back like the secret service.

Calum Beauchamp:

Triangulate any signals of outgoing videos, and stop them immediately.

The guard he speaks to, nods, and moves away, speaking into his commlink. Calum approaches Halo, and Lucian raises an eyebrow.

Lucian Slater:

Wait, aren't you-.

Calum Beauchamp:

Shh.

He smiles at Lucian and winks at Gael who grins and gives him a salute.

Calum Beauchamp:

There are things these people do not need to hear.

The sound of sirens pierces the air, and two dark cruisers with the BPD streaks and stars pull up with loud screeches.

Halo Noel:

It seems I have much to explain.

Lucian Slater:

You don't say.

MARCH 21, 2013. | 4:46pm —

INTTWISTED CABANA. BISTRO. PRIVATE BOOTHDAY.

LUCIAN sits in a charming bistro, across from Gael as he is drawn into pouring over his art with Halo. The man watches as Gael explains, conveying interest, wonder and curiosity. Halo's chemistry with Gael is unmatched. Unlike anything, he'd seen beside his own time with Gael.

Halo Noel:

Perhaps a few shading comparisons would help define your two-dimensional sketches.

Halo points at the page, running his hand along the line of an undecorated vase.

Halo Noel:

Maybe catch the light around this bit with a little illusion of eclipsing.

Gael gasps and picks up the book, then gawks at Halo.

Gael Slater:

That's exactly what I need for my dragon!

He slumps, remembering he'd discarded it earlier.

Gael Slater:

Except it's in the trash.

Lucian Slater:

You still have a month to turn it in.

Gael's gaze slackens as he glances at his father, almost incredulous.

Gael Slater:

Two weeks out of that month, I'll be studying Arlingfell, soaking up its culture. And I still have like, one report to turn in for debate camp next summer.

Lucian Slater:

Gael, you're nine years old. Just be that for one night. Sometimes you planning your future kind of seems... dull.

Halo Noel:

I think Gael having some idea what he wants to do further in the future is more than just... dull. I knew my responsibilities, and I do not lead a dull life.

Lucian Slater:

What kind of life do you even live? Because that guy was a teacher, and he said you're his boss, which means...

Halo Noel:

For now, I am just a teacher. Calum's announcement was a bit premature, but tactical, as it will be so... in a month.

Gael Slater:

He's the leader of the military, dad. The Arlan Guard is...

He trails off as he looks up at Halo, inclining his head as the man watches him.

Lucian Slater:

What?

Gael Slater:

Nothing! I'm going to pee now!

Gael beams, glad they don't see the bashful look on his face before running off through the restaurant. He disappears down a brightly lit hallway with RESTROOMS in bold letters over the doorway. Lucian glances after his son, hand raised and mouth posed to speak, but he shakes his head and turns to Halo who smiles at him.

Lucian Slater:

I have no idea how that boy's mind works sometimes.

Halo Noel:

It is not our jobs to understand or mould it in the image that best suits our perception, or delusion if you will. Gael loves to explore all avenues, as I believe that curiosity will take him far. Even the times he chooses to play instead of work.

Lucian chuckles at this, but he looks over at Halo and lowers his gaze.

Lucian Slater:

When he fell today. You... ran to him. Why?

Halo hesitates, uncertain of his answer.

Halo Noel:

Gael and I have sparked a friendship most teachers avoid. He is something special, and it is not my place to feel so strongly for one child, but if I should have a child or children, I would want them to be just like him. And I know how silly that sounds.

Lucian nods, understanding then the bond between them, even if it felt strange to picture their age differences making a friendship comfortable.

Lucian Slater:

I can see why he looks up to you. You were not subtle in making sure he and Jessie were safe during the entire ordeal.

Halo sighs, but he smiles primly.

Halo Noel:

It might not be my place to ask, but; What happened earlier? Why did you choose me?

Lucian Slater:

My son; he's a good judge of character, despite his age. He trusts you, so I had no choice at the moment. Which did not seem far-off. You seemed to have enjoyed your little outing.

Halo nods graciously.

Halo Noel:

I have never been to such a vibrant place. Is it much like amusement parks and fairs with Ferris Wheels?

Lucian chuckles and Halo blushes at his own naïveté.

Halo Noel:

Well, stop laughing. I merely wish to understand American customs more.

Lucian Slater:

You've never been to the local fair? Or an amusement park? That's... strange. How come?

Halo Noel:

I always assumed it was an invite thing.

Lucian raises his eyebrows, but he nods.

Halo Noel:

However, you did ignore my first question.

Lucian Slater:

My best friend and work partner for most of my life pulled a fast one. I had to find out what was going on.

Halo nods, deciding not to go further.

Halo Noel:

Well, I was glad to have offered you that time.

Lucian Slater:

I could have called his usual babysitter, but she's on the school's Spanish Festival choir.

He shakes his head, but he smiles at Halo as they make eye contact.

Lucian Slater:

Really. Thank you for looking after Gael. Can I interest you in meatloaf as payment?

Halo chuckles at the musing in his voice but shakes his head.

Halo Noel:

I would love to, but I must be going. Perhaps another time?

Lucian nods, smiling to hide his sudden disappointment.

Lucian Slater:

I mean, we... just ate.

Halo pauses and Lucian chuckles awkwardly.

Lucian Slater:

I was thinking like... another time when you're free.

He draws out the last word, and Halo's face reddens in embarrassment.

Halo Noel:

Oh, I... When?

Lucian's eyes bulge, but he composes himself.

Lucian Slater:

Uh, maybe... Friday night? Well, you probably have homework to grade.

Halo Noel:

Friday night is perfect. I will get the address from Gael? If-.

Lucian Slater:

Yeah, no, that's fine, but I... kind of already have your number?

He gestures nervously with his arms and Halo face palms himself, but he lets out a soft chuckle and nods.

Halo Noel:

You are correct. You do. I will see you then?

Lucian Slater:

Or before.

He clears his throat and Halo's brows furrow.

Lucian Slater:

You know, small world. Might see each other in the store. The park. Maybe even the... post office.

He chuckles again and Halo covers his smile with a hand.

Halo Noel:

I will see you soon, Lucian.

Lucian Slater:

Yeah, awesome.

He gives an unenthusiastic fist pump when Halo turns his back, and sighs as he shakes his head. Embarrassed at his nervous disposition in front of Halo Noel.

Lucian Slater (Whispering):

Superrrrr...

MARCH 22, 2013. | 3:21pm —

EXTBOSTON HEALTH CENTER. EMERGENCY SERVICES - LOBBYDAY.

Lucian approaches the nurse's station, eyes darting about carefully. A young nurse, Bailey Sledge, notices him and walks over.

Nurse Bailey Sledge:

Mr Slater? Hi. Are you here to see Doctor Pedant?

Lucian Slater:

No, I'm actually here about Barrington Cruso. He came in yesterday evening, a possible stroke, infected cuts and bruises?

Her eyes flicker in recognition and she nods with a smile.

Lucian Slater:

I made the call to emergency services.

Nurse Bailey Sledge:

Come with me.

She stalks off, and he hurries to catch up with her.

Lucian Slater:

You're not going to ask my relation to the guy?

Nurse Bailey Sledge:

We all heard that call. I think you deserve to at least know how the guy's doing.

Lucian chuckles and she stops at the entrance of a room and presses a command on her tablet. The door slides open with a chime, and there Barry lays on his bed. Seeming coherent, he smiles when he recognizes Lucian's face.

Barry Cruso:

There he is! The man who saved my life.

He beams seeming well-cleaned up, and smoothly bandaged all over. Tray of food, not of the hospital variety before him.

Lucian Slater:

Gave me quite a scare back there.

Lucian smiles and stuffs his hands into his pockets.

Nurse Bailey Sledge:

You can have a few minutes. His son just ran out to get some more stuff. Should I let him know you're here?

Lucian Slater:

I'm not staying long, my son's in the car waiting.

She nods, then leaves. Lucian steps into the room, moving to Barry's side.

Barry Cruso:

How old's the kid?

Lucian Slater:

He's nine, and too smart for his own good.

Barry laughs, seeming comfortable.

Lucian Slater:

What happened? I thought you were just some random...

Barry Cruso:

Homeless guy?

He laughs and Lucian frowns, but the man waves him off.

Barry Cruso:

Full disclosure, I... am a functioning schizophrenic, who mixed up his meds because I assured my son he could go take some job in some country that sounds like it came right out of a fairytale book.

Lucian smiles and Barry glances at him.

Barry Cruso:

Thanks for not judging me.

Lucian Slater:

I still startled you.

Barry Cruso:

You did, but you didn't intend for me to fall, or have a stroke.

Lucian nods and the man nods vigorously.

The door chimes, and slides open to reveal a fair-skinned, biracial man in his late twenties. His dazzling blue-green eyes glint when he sees the stranger sitting with his father.

Barry Cruso:

Look who's back.

The young man smiles at his father and strolls into the room.

Barry Cruso:

Lucian, this is my son, Ethan. My boy, meet the man who saved my life.

Lucian stands and extends his hand to Ethan. The young man tentatively takes it, giving a nimble shake.

Lucian Slater:

Technically I just called 911 when he fell behind my shop.

Ethan Cruso:

So, you're here for a thanks?

Barry Cruso:

Ethan...

Lucian narrows his gaze, but he takes a leaf out of Halo's book.

Lucian Slater:

Believe it or not, I only came here to see how he was doing. He was badly injured.

Ethan Cruso:

Sure.

Lucian turns to Barry, smiling faintly.

Lucian Slater:

Glad you're ok, Mr Cruso.

Lucian gives Ethan one last glance before circling him to exit the room. Ethan turns to his father who shakes his head, then turns back to his food.

Barry Cruso:

He wasn't here for a thank you. I may not have been in my right mind, but I was aware of his presence, and what I remember is him making sure I was ok before treating me like a drug addict.

Ethan Cruso:

You're not a drug addict, dad. I just... forgot to call you and remind you that your main medication was switched out. Apparently, I messed up.

He throws his hands up in defeat and walks to the bed to sit.

Barry Cruso:

So you take it out on the poor guy?

Barry scoffs and Ethan rolls his eyes.

Ethan Cruso:

He'll be fine. He didn't seem that affected by what I had to say.

Barry Cruso:

Because he's a good guy. Something you apparently need since you're so grumpy

Ethan scoffs as he glances at his father in surprise. Later, he exits the hospital's winding doors just as Lucian begins descending the stairs.

Ethan Cruso:

Mr Slater.

Ethan emerges arms crossed over his chest as a frown settles on his face. Lucian stops, but he takes his time turning around.

Lucian Slater:

Save your breath. As I said, I'm just here to see how Barry's doing.

Lucian turns to leave.

Ethan Cruso:

My father...

Lucian stops again, turning with a loud sigh.

Ethan Cruso:

He's a good man, and despite his schizophrenia, he has very good judgement. I'm sort of... less functional than he is.

Lucian Slater:

I'm glad he's ok. You have a good day now, sir.

Lucian bows his head.

Ethan Cruso:

Look... Can I buy you coffee? Sort of a not thank you, since you're not here for that apparently.

Lucian Slater:

That's... nice, but I already have a hot chocolate date.

Lucian looks ahead, where Gael waves at him from across the parking lot. Ethan nods in resignation, and Lucian turns to leave.

MARCH 23, 2013 | 1:23pm —

EXT. ARLAN HOUSE - STORROW LAGOON. NOEL RESIDENCE - DENDAY.

Olive Moore:

Are you sure you needed us to help with planning?

Looking masterful in his tan pinstriped waistcoat over a crisp, white long sleeve and cyan-green necktie, Halo dominates in yet another outfit. His cuffed chinos are the same colour and pattern as his coat, matched with glossy, light brown loafers.

Halo chuckles as he glances at Olive and Lucian Slater who joins him in the den. A warm room with central air, polished hardwood floors, quality fixtures, and angled windows. The furniture gives a matching, retro feel, and an adjoining rear balcony that encourages them to relax. Between them, the grandiose table is set with choices of tea, wine, water, and coffee.

Magnificent views of Charles River consume both sides of the meticulously finished and modern property. Sprawling over a lush, green oasis on a half-acre parcel of land occupying a peaceful street position.

Lucian Slater:

I mean, I'm glad to help.

His eager smile earns a look from Olive, who glances back at Halo with reckless regard for she conveys her curiosity openly.

Olive Moore:

Mr Slater. I didn't know you and Halo were friends.

Lucian Slater:

We had a few run-ins. He's a cool guy.

He shrugs, but the forced nonchalance is recorded in all their memories. Lucian looks at Halo, who smirks knowingly as he sips the last of his red, fruity cocktail.

Olive Moore:

This is also for the colleagues and parents. Wait. Who watches the kids?

Halo Noel:

The property has its own staff and security. Their duties that week, is to tend to the children's needs and safety.

Lucian Slater:

I see that.

Lucian chuckles as he places the pile down.

Lucian Slater:

How are you affording this?

Halo Noel:

My country takes pride in showing off. The King is also a fan of children, as he seeks to nurture them to preserve the future of legacies and name. Foreigners even more so. That is why our values are brought up around the nurture of our future and our children.

Olive Moore:

I almost want to change my mind. Bring my entire family and fuck off with Easter and my extended family at least until Christmas.

Halo Noel:

Ok, then do that. Your wife can sign on as a chaperone, and your twins are in the second grade. The estate can spare another family suite.

Olive Moore:

I couldn't ask you to do that.

She waves Halo off with a scoff, but he remains composed-serious.

Olive Moore:

Wait, you would do that?

Halo nods and the woman scoffs as her lips curl up into an unsure smile. She looks over at Lucian, who gives her an encouraging nod. She then smiles, elated and a bit relieved.

Halo Noel:

I'll make the adjustments. I'll make sure you get an adjoining room for your girls with bathrooms en-suite.

Olive Moore:

Did you really just offer to take my family on vacation?

Halo Noel:

It is merely a few more seats on a reserved aircraft.

Halo shrugs flippantly.

Halo Noel:

I do however need a list of their allergies and other details that will help make the stay comfortable.

Lucian Slater:

Wait. How come I don't have to turn in a list?

Halo Noel:

Because the list was provided in completion. Even filed with the trip organizers to make necessary adjustments.

Lucian frowns at Halo, then leans back.

Halo Noel:

I have already cleared this with the school board, and we have two more weeks to acquire and implement all of the demands and actions from parents and children.

Lucian Slater:

Wait, how'd you even get a list? It was-... Gael.

Halo nods and Lucian grins then taps the table. He stands and grabs his pile of papers then rolls them up. Olive stands with another relieved sigh, and Halo chuckles.

Olive Moore:

The girls are going to be so excited, and not to mention my wife.

Halo smiles with a modest nod.

Halo Noel:

Resident visas are also cheap.

He winks at Olive, who rounds the table and hugs him tightly.

Olive Moore:

Trust me. If we like it, we just might consider something like that.

She pulls back chuckling, and Halo kisses her left cheek as he lets her go. Halo walks them to the door, engaged in typical farewell chatter. As they approach the foyer, an older, studious Arab gentleman emerges. His pristine black suit is simple but professional. Though his presence makes Halo brighten up.

Halo Noel:

Oh! Mr Slater, Olive, this is Mustafa Al Said, the resident butler.

The man turns to Halo's guests, bowing curtly.

Mustafa Al Said:

A pleasure, Mr Slater and Mrs Moore.

Olive gasps dramatically and Halo covers his laugh with his right hand.

Lucian Slater:

Nice to meet you, man.

He walks up to Mustafa and grasps the man's hand firmly. Though he is startled, Mustafa lets out an amused chuckle and cocks his head as a sign of respect.

Halo Noel:

I will see you both on Monday.

Halo nods at Mustafa, who opens the door. They all pause when they spot Qasim Assad, primped in his grey, tailored suit.

Halo Noel:

Qasim?

Qasim Assad:

Mr Noel.
