Brooke was confused. Why would someone moan while they were in restroom? She was about to knock on the door when she heard someone yelling from inside. Afraid that something might have happened, she hastily opened the door and was shocked to her core. One of Greg’s assistants, Ariana Hawkins, was naked and was kissing her fiance, while the said fiance was buried deep inside the woman. Greg had Ariana perched atop the counter in between the basin and the wall. Brooke couldn’t believe her eyes. She stood frozen on the spot. She blinked and shook her head trying to deny whatever was happening in front of her. But no matter how much she tried, the scene remained the same. She wasn’t dreaming then, it dawned on her, no matter how much she wanted. Her heart stuttered and her breathing was erratic. This was reality. Her boyfriend of three years, Greg Wilson, to whom she was about to get married, was having sex with his assistant, Ariana Hawkins!
“HOW DARE YOU, YOU FUCKING BASTARD?” Brooke shouted, knowing people in the hall could very well hear her.
Greg and Ariana looked at her like deer caught in the headlights.
“Brooke…” Greg scrambled to get away from Ariana, pulling his pants back up.
“I trusted you. HOW COULD YOU?” Brooke stepped inside, yelling at the top of her voice, unable to take in the betrayal.
“Brooke...hush. Not so loud. My folks are sitting out there. Not to mention the entire town. I’ve got a reputation to maintain.” Greg gritted his teeth as she talked to her in a hushed tone.
Brooke couldn’t believe the nerve of this man. “Your reputation? YOUR REPUTATION? You asshole, you cheated on me and you’re giving me lessons on reputation?”
“Brooke…”
“Don’t Brooke me you liar. You’re just another scum who can’t keep his dick in his pants, instead of parading it all over town.”
This time Ariana interrupted, “Brooke, come on. It was just a fun goodbye. One last time before you get married, you know.” She smirked, not giving a second thought to the fact that she was standing naked in the restroom with her boss and his soon to be wife.
Brooke’s eyebrows hit her hairline, she couldn’t believe this. Her mouth went dry. “ONE LAST TIME? How many times was it, huh? Tell me how long this has been going on!”
“Umm...let me think…” Ariana answered smugly. She never liked Brooke and she always wondered what Greg found in this woman.
Brooke moved so fast, she herself didn’t know when she charged at Ariana, punching her in the face. “Shut the hell up. You...you are the culprit.” Ariana was knocked down on the floor, moaning in pain, hands covering her nose. Brooke was about to punch the woman again when Greg held her by her arm.
“That’s enough Brooke,” Greg yelled, trying to keep Brooke from attacking again.
“Don’t you touch me, you piece of shit.” Brooke pulled her arm back. “You prick, how could you?” She demanded. She had trusted this man with her great. To see him betrayed that trust was like a punch to the gut.
“It’s all your fault, Brooke. A man can only wait for so long. I had enough patience all these years. But…”
“Oh, so you’re saying you went behind my back and cheated on me just because I didn’t put out for you?” Brooke questioned, unable to fathom the faulty logic.
“Brooke…” Greg spoke, quite exasperated, but wasn’t able to complete his sentence as Brooke interrupted him.
“Shut the hell up. I can’t believe I was going to marry you,” Brooke said, her voice breaking a bit. She couldn’t even look at the man. Just the thought of standing near the man made her nauseous. She was disgusted with him. She walked out of the bathroom and straight into the hall when she heard Greg yelling after her.
“That’s just it, isn’t it? Throw a fit like the bitch that you are and walk out. That’s exactly your style.” Greg rushed after her.
“How dare you?” Brooke yelled back. She could feel everyone looking at them.
“How dare me? How dare you? How dare you deny me? Me? I’m Greg Wilson and I always get what I want.” Greg shouted and for the first time in their relationship, Brooke saw the arrogance and sense of entitlement oozing out of the man. She questioned herself as to how she never saw this.
“You know what, pretty boy? You are right. You always get what you want. Just like you got to sleep with that secretary of yours because you could no longer keep it in your pants. Which means you got a booty at your beck and call and you once again are going to be the talk of the town. You got what you wanted. And guess what else? The wedding is off. Don’t you dare show me your face ever again, you lying, cheating bastard.” Saying this, Brooke walked out of the hall. There were people around whispering. She could see her family and friends gathering around her. Her brother Neil was angry, she could tell. There was sadness in her mother’s eyes and her sister looked furious. She wanted to run to them and cry her heart out in the safety of their arms. But at the moment, she couldn’t. She felt humiliated in front of everyone. She couldn’t stop here for another second and listen to anyone trying to give her false assurances. She rushed to her car and drove away towards her apartment, trying to keep the tears at bay. She couldn’t believe this was her fate. She had loved the man with everything she had and lost him just because Greg would rather sleep with his slut of a secretary than getting married to Brooke.
All Greg had to do was ask him, explain his needs, and Brooke would have given him what he desired. Instead, her fiance, well ex-fiance, thought it appropriate to have sex with someone else. A single tear rolled down her cheek. Until today Brooke was at her happiest. She had her own firm, she earned well and had a great family. She was in love. She had a loving fiance and she was about to get married to the love of her life. She was going to finally settle down, have a great married life, have kids, maybe adopt a dog and live happily ever after. It was everything she ever wanted for herself.
And now she had lost everything. Brooke angrily wiped at her eyes and decided that right now she didn’t want to think about anything. She didn’t want to meet anyone, didn’t want to hear the pity in her friend’s or her family’s voice when they consoled her. Her only plans for the moment were getting hammered, eating junk food, and passing out.
That was exactly what she did once she reached her apartment, in that exact order.
Brooke spent the whole week wallowing in misery. She felt dejected. She had no motivation to work or do anything except to eat, drink, and sleep. She had switched off her phone, not caring about anything else going on in the world. She was sure her friends and family must have tried calling her, but she was in no mood to be interactive. Her parents had visited her immediately after the debacle. But she just yelled at them, begging them to leave her alone. Even her childhood friends Beth Gordon and Steve Mannings had attempted to visit her, pounding on the door for more than ten minutes, but Brooke had plainly ignored them, opting to pull the sheets over her head and closing her eyes.“Come on, open the damn door, Brooke.” Beth shouted from outside. She was worried about her best friend. She tried knocking again but no one opened the door.
The next day Brooke got up early and went about her morning routine. She went for a jog, which was a bit awkward as everyone at the park seemed to be giving her looks and talking about her in hushed tones. She gathered it was bound to happen after the whole 'wedding gone wrong' debacle. She didn’t pay too much attention to the gossip-mongering and focused on herself. When she came back home, she headed for a shower. She had eggs, toast, and fruit for breakfast. The first thing she decided to do was call her friends and family. She called Beth and Steve first, starting with an apology for not opening up the door that day and for being rude. They both forgave him quickly, but Beth threatened him that if Brooke ever did that again, she’d barge in by breaking down the door and kicking her ass. They talked for a while and made a plan to meet up at the cafe sometime soon. Next up, she called his family, assuring her mother that everything was ok
Brooke still gets sad and pissy. The people in town talked behind her back, and she was on the verge of almost closing her firm. Her entire life, all Brooke ever wanted was to start a firm of her own, be successful, have a husband who loved her, and a house with a backyard where their kids could play and grow in a loving environment. In other words, a perfect apple pie life. For the past few years, she was sure she was about to achieve her dream by marrying Greg, but to her horror, she’d been living in a fantasy. A fantasy that came crashing down right in front of her own eyes when her ex-fiance had cheated on her. In front of her! At their wedding! As if that was not enough, Brooke’s asshole of an ex had the nerve to spread rumors around the town that Brooke was too vanilla in bed, making that the reason why Greg had to turn to his secretary to satisfy his needs. Moreover,
Alaina, the barista and their mutual friend approached them after a few minutes and shook herhead at Steve's antics, “Hey, asshole,” she remarked, looking at Steve. It was their usual banter. Steve hitting on her and Alaina turning him down every time they visited. Brooke was always amused at how persistent Steve was. He always flirted with her despite her humiliating him all the time. Brooke couldn’t fault her friend though. Alaina was beautiful and smart and any guy would be lucky to have her. “Going with the usual, boys?”“Yes, sugar. Except, Brooke here would like some cherry pie for herself to cheer her up,” Steve replied, turning into a lovesick fool, gazing lovingly at Alaina.“Is that right? Everything okay, Brooke?” Alaina asked gently, turning towards her. Sh
Nathan Reginald Bradford was known as a ruthless businessman. This was partly because when it came to business deals, he was indeed ruthless, but also because he had worked hard to achieve the kind of success that he’d reached. Nathan had inherited the brewery business from his father, but it wasn’t as prominently known at the time. Nathan was a straight A, Harvard Business Graduate, with a goal to make his mark in the business world. He had strived and taken enormous efforts to make Short Stack Brewing Co. Ltd. a household name. Today he had breweries located around the world and had invested in many small breweries, trying to support them. Plus, his looks came in handy at times when a deal was being finalized.Nathan grew up in a loving household in Sacramento, California. The Pada
Nathan hailed from a family of cowboy ranchers. They were natives of Dallas where his family owned acres of land and looked after the ranch and bred horses. The breed they nurtured at the ranch was best known for equestrian sports in Texas back then. When the world war came, the economy took a massive hit and everything shut down and the Bradfords were forced to leave Dallas. They’d never sold the ranch though, always planning on going back to their roots at right time once everything was settled. However, the right time never came and when Nathan’s father needed the money he took a decision to sell off their ancestral ranch. Whatever money was made out of the deal was invested in starting Short Stack Brewing Co. Pvt. Ltd. Nathan always heard a lot about Texan culture from his grandfather and he always was fascinated with the stories of cowboys and their morales. It was his wish to at least once see the land he belonged to. Before his deat
No less than five minutes later, Alaina was sitting in the back seat of the lavish black sedan with Mr. Bradford, giving directions to the driver.“So, how are things going around here?” Nathan asked her curiously.“It’s great.”Nathan fidgeted a bit, “Good. So, it's a small town and I’d like to know what type of …”“Let's cut to the chase, you wanna know about Brooke, don’t you?” Alaina said, eyeing the man, loving the way he turned a bright shade of pink.Nathan flushed. “Well, is that her name? Brooke?” He tested out the name on his tongue and decided h
After listening to Alaina, Nathan thought about making a plan. What was the best possible scenario he could come up with to get closer to Brooke? Because Nathan couldn’t stop thinking about the green-eyed beauty even for a single second. Thoughts of Brooke had worked their way into Nathan’s heart and soul. It was weird, Nathan knew, but he couldn’t help it. One look at Brooke and he’d felt as if he’d known her for all of his life and that there was a deep bond; although as yet undefined, between them. But one thing was clear to him. Nathan needed Brooke like he needed air to breathe. It was love at first sight!A few days passed while Nathan set himself up at the best motel the town offered. It was important that he stay there while his construction crew started to work on converting the winery int
