An Invitation

Life was good. I wasn’t nearly as lonely as I had been a week ago. It was strange. I didn’t talk to Alex all that much, but knowing she was in the same state made a huge difference. We texted off and on throughout the day. Nothing deep or incredibly personal, but it was nice to know she was around. It made a world of difference in my attitude.

I was smiling as I swung the hammer, driving the nail into the strip of wood I was using to fix the hole in the barn. I had taken off my shirt some time ago. The barn was hot as hell and I had been sweating like a damn pig. As soon as I got back from picking up Oliver, I was ordering a giant fan to put in the barn. I imagined a long, hot summer working in the barn and did not look forward to busting my ass in the heat. I needed some of the creature comforts I had grown accustomed to during my time in the city.

I heard a truck coming and immediately knew it was her. With the hammer still in my hand, I walked out of the barn to see her jump
