It was two days before school started and Athos was driving Evie home after a doctor’s appointment. She talked him into stopping by the Cookie Jar for a decaf coffee and a toasted sandwich. And a few cookies. A slice of cake. An order of fried potato slices. And a fruit salad.

Athos was laughing as he turned onto their road. Evie had the Styrofoam box of potato slices open in her lap and eating them with her good hand.

“Are you sure that we got enough for you to eat?”

“Yeah, there’s food at the house.” She said around a mouthful of food.

“Which one is hungry? Baby Ink or Baby Tank?” he asked pulling into the driveway and opening the garage door with a press of a button.

“All three of us.” She said as he parked in the garage.
