Chapter 42: Brian's Broken Promise

Riley was heartbroken. How could she not be? She felt robbed of a better love and life.

What if she fell in love with Adrian instead of Brian? What if Adrian never met an accident? What if Brian did not own up to saving her?

After Adrian told her the truth, she couldn't help but break down in tears.

"I can't—I can't accept it. It should have been you! It should have been you!" Riley's voice cracked with the weight of her emotions. Her hands were tightly clenched against her chest, and her breaths came in uneven gasps.

"Riley." From his wheelchair, Adrian dropped to his knees to level with her. He cautiously held her arms, asking, "Did I say something wrong?"

"No!" Riley held on to Adrian's arm. She said, "I am just so mad at Brian! He lied to both of us."

Her lips quivered, and she said without hesitation, "I just felt that it should have been you, you and me, and not Brian."
