Chapter 51

It’s almost one o’clock as I plant my feet on the landing of my private quarters. I am dead tired and can’t wait to crawl into bed next to my Catherine. I have been wanting for her since I left the mansion to sort out some businesses.

The mansion is eerily quiet and the landing is even more so. I narrow my gaze toward the chair that Carlos, a young man who’s still working to earn his position, is sitting in. He is slumped in the chair with a cap drawn low over his face. He’s never asleep on the job. He knows what it could lead to. I go up to him and jank the cap off his head. His head falls limply back but he doesn’t wake. I slap him hard over the face.

“Carlos!” No reaction. He has been drugged and is out cold
