For the first time in forever, Ashley and I were in perfect harmony.

We were scooping popcorn from a bowl while a documentary we were barely paying attention to played on the flat screen in her home office. We decided that I’d work from home twice a week and she’d do the same so we could spend time away from the chaos that was rotting our relationship.

It felt nice, serene, wholesome.

As though she knew I was thinking of our current solitude, she looked away from the files before her and smiled warmly at me. I returned the smile, but just then, I got the harsh realization that I would rather be in this serene moment with someone else.
