CHAPTER EIGHTY-ONE

“Hey, are you alright?”

“Oh, yeah... Nothing serious... The baby's kicking.. hard..”

Ruby had noticed that her companion (Mercedes) had been uncomfortable for a while as they had both gone together in Ruby's car to get some more provisions to stock the house up, for Gio, Gabi, and the two women to have enough to eat as they anticipated attack.

They'd intentionally left by 6:30 in the evening, as Gio had suggested, to take advantage of the cover of the night and darkness and hide from whoever it was that would be secretly looking out for them. Gio had been so worried about Mercedes leaving without him, certain that he was the only one who could keep her safe, and she was skeptical, too, but it was determined that Ruby and Mercedes, being the two women, would be the only ones to know what groceries they would need and that Mercedes’ Spanish would be very useful in communicating with the traders.

Gio, however, had made sure that Mercedes went with a phone that had his number saved on it,
