Chapter 56

Toby’s POV

I didn’t see the fist that came at my face in time. The jolt to my jaw caused me to lose my balance. It hurt, and surprised me, but not as much as the feeling that I just felt. Fear. I felt a fear so strong that it nearly knocked the wind out of me. Since it wasn’t coming from me, it could only be coming from one other person: Rae.

I look towards the moon. It is now past midnight so her connection to me will be stronger. What has her so scared that I can still sense it miles away. Forgetting that I am sparring with my friend, Ryan, I bolt up and rush to the barracks. I need to call home.

I could mind link from where I am but I don’t want to accidentally peek into private matters. I feel jittery as I locate the phone and I call my parents. After the third ring, I’m starting to get really nervous. I hang up and try again. It takes three tries before someone finally picks up and, I am so on edge, I collapse into the chair when I hear my mother’s voice.

“Hello?” She whispers.
