Chapter 49 – The Biggest Joke

(Eve's POV)

“That was…”

I opened my eyes and glanced at Bethany, hoping to glare at her, but Marga caught my attention. Her palms on my youngest child’s face, covering my daughter’s eyes.

“Not you,” finished Bethany, smirking and turning her head to the pathway.

I glanced over my shoulder, following her gaze, and saw Callahan and Rudy walking away.

When I turned to them, Rosie walked in the opposite direction, taking Isabella with her and fetching Theo from the other table. My lips parted, unsure of what to say. My heart was in revolt, angry at Callahan, but when I saw them leaving the party and Rosie not looking at me, I realized I had done something wrong.

No! It was wrong. I shouldn’t have entertained Bethany’s joke. I shouldn’t have kissed Wyatt.

Bernard cleared his throat. His lips curved into a gentle smile but didn’t reach his eyes. He looked hurt.
