Forty Six - High School Sweethearts

Tension was heavy between Eric and I, even after we apologized to each other. Eric's words hung hazy in my mind as we walked in silence. Neither of us spoke. Waning sunlight sliced through the treetops, accompanying us.

We walked past Eric's house, stopping as he unlocked his front door. "I'll see you later," I said. "I think I'm going to stay at home tonight."

He gazed at me for a moment. "Alright."

"Call me if you need anything."

"Yeah. You too."

I walked home alone, part of me foolishly wishing he had asked me to stay with him. The thought was only fleeting as I reminded myself that Eric and I weren't always going to get along. We weren't always going to agree. And the last thing I needed was more trouble between us.
