Twenty Six - We promised

I put Nova to bed at nine that night and then went downstairs to see if Genevieve needed anything from me. She was sitting on the couch, a glass of wine in her hand, watching television.

"Is my dad home yet?" I asked her.

"No," she answered. "I'm waiting for him."

"Do you need me to do anything before I go upstairs for the night?"

"If you don't mind taking out the trash really quick then nothing. Thank you." She smiled at me.

"No problem."

I walked into the kitchen, pulling the trash bag from the garbage can beneath the sink. I put on my coat quickly and walked down the front path, putting the trash out for the truck that would come by in the morning. I turned and started walking back inside when I heard a hushed voice
