The Draco was not a sentient creature in the way that humans can talk, understand, or think about abstract concepts but it was still a living and breathing creature. It had desires, albeit not as complex, like all human beings. 

It desired food and had complex enough taste buds to prefer meals from tender meat in comparison to tough meat. It also preferred being in the sunlight as it felt more comfortable in the heat than cold. It enjoyed eating living animals compared to dead carcasses. 

And just like any good human parent, the Draco also wanted its true offspring to prosper and grow up to become like him or even better than him. On top of its almost human-like tendencies, it had paternal instincts, something that humans didn’t have.
