Chapter 25

Adeline's POV

I returned to the house I lived in with Chris at nightfall, carrying the things I had brought earlier, and walked in. I had so much to think about that I would rather go home than see my stepfather again.

The servants welcomed me back, and one took my luggage swiftly to my room. I followed him and asked. "Is Chris home yet?"

The maid in front of me didn't answer and just kept walking. I paused, feeling surprised that a servant who looked younger than me didn't answer my question as a lady of the house. I gritted my teeth.

"Hey, I was asking you a question!" I snapped at the woman until she flinched and hurriedly turned her head.

The maid bowed politely. "My apologies, Madam. What did you ask me just now? I was carrying things so that I couldn't listen."

"Are you making excuses to my face?" I asked, holding back the anger that was already on the tip of my tongue.
