Chapter 0004

FLASH BACK

In the city of Redwood, winter had been long in coming, but when it finally arrived, it was not a gentle frosty season but rather a fierce and blustery affair.

Hail-like snowflakes pelted the streets, piling up in icy drifts that were as beautiful as they were dangerous.

Inside the Ashland Hospital, a young woman lay pale and frail in a ward bed, her breathing labored and her pulse weak.

Amelia Clifford was the daughter of a powerful and wealthy family, but even their money and influence could not save her from the grip of death.

"Mrs. Clifford," the doctor said, his voice breaking as he turned to face the grieving mother. "She's not going to make it. Without a blood transfusion, she'll be gone in a matter of hours."

The doctor's words were like a knife to the heart, and Mrs. Clifford could only look on in shock. Her daughter, Amelia, was lying so still and pale on the bed, her chest rising and falling with shallow breaths.

Mrs. Clifford's hands trembled as she reached out to stroke Amelia's hair. How could this be happening? They had so much money, so much influence - how?

“What going to happen to my daughter!” Mrs.Clifford looked at the doctor in a rush, evidently panicking. “Please doctor, we can get the blood, we have all the money!!! What should we do?”

"Mrs. Clifford, I'm sorry to say this, but there's nothing you can do to save your daughter," the doctor said gently but firmly. "Even with all the money in the world, we can't find a compatible blood donor in time. The best thing you can do for her now is to be with her, to comfort her in her last moments."

"No! There must be something we can do! I can't lose my daughter!" Mrs. Clifford's voice rose to a shrill pitch, her eyes wide and wild with panic. "Please, there must be something!"

But the doctor was absolute that he felt so sure she was going to die. Mrs. Clifford slumped in her chair, her whole body shaking as sobs racked her frame.

How could this be happening? Her beautiful, vibrant daughter was about to die, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. She buried her face in her hands, unable to bear the thought of losing her only child.

"You said you found a donor?" Mrs. Clifford's voice rose in a sudden burst of hope. "You told me you had someone whose blood matched my daughter's!"

The doctor hesitated for a moment, his expression grim. "Yes, but..."

He was cut off by the sudden opening of the door, and the tall, dark figure who filled the doorway. The man was impeccably dressed in a black suit, his white shirt dazzlingly clean, his features stunningly handsome. Mrs. Clifford recognized him immediately, her eyes lighting up with hope.

"Jackson!" she exclaimed, rushing to his side. “Ohh, thank goodness, you’re here.” She grasped, her face brighting.“Please, Jackson, talk to him. He said my daughter would die. You can’t let her die.”

Jackson Timberlake is a rich billionaire and he turned out to be Amelia’s best friend. She had always been there for him through thick and tough times, now he was here for her, to save her life.

“It’s alright, I’m here, I’ll talk to him, you can wait outside.” He held her shoulders, walking her towards the door. After she was exited from the room, Jackson approached the doctor. “Doctor, please speak to me, I’m her guardian.”

“Okay, what I was saying earlier to Mrs. Clifford was that Amelia Clifford here is going to die soon if she doesn’t get a blood donor now.”

“Forget about that. You know who I am, right?” Jackson spoke in haste, “Tell me what to do to save her life.”

The doctor sighed, looked at Amelia lying pale and back at Jackson.

“Mrs Emily Greenfield had been found to be the suited matching donor for Amelia here. With Emily altered blood, Amelia can be saved.”he suggested, holding under his chin. He picked up a folder and hand it over to Jackson.“Have a look.”

After scanning the document quickly, Jackson returned his face back at the doctor.

“So…why isn’t she donating her blood for Amelia?” He asked, haste in his voice. The doctor pulled Jackson’s along by his shoulder and walked him to his office.

“I think you guys should meet up and make a deal.”

He pushed the door open and there, Emily Greenfield sat at a chair, her hands tightly held together.

“Mrs. Greenfield?” Jackson called and Emily looked up. Her blue eyes sparking right at him. She stood to her feet and Jackson stretched his hands at her.

She received the handshake.

“I got called over here. What can I help you with Mr. Timberlake.”

“You know me?” Jackson asked with a raised face.

“Yes.” Jackson was famous in the whole city, because of his wealth, therefore it would be a lie if she didn’t know him.

“I need your help Mrs. Greenfield.” Jackson’s voice changed. When Emily looked at his eyes, she could see desperation in them. “I need your blood, Mrs. Greenfield, can you do that?”

Emily was taken aback. Not only did she know him, but was Jackson also her longtime crush. She had always wished to be noticed by Jackson. She attended the gala he attended and events he did, still not one did he pay attention to her.

But, now that she heard that Mr. Timberlake asked to see her, she didn’t know he would want something from her.

“Mr. Timberlake.” Emily called.

“There’s no time for all this…” Jackson held her shoulders in desperation, “please say yes.” He begged and then, Emily decided, after a blink.

“I’ll give my blood.” Jackson smiled and grabbed hold of her arm but as he was about to pull her along, she stopped him. “Only if you get married to me.”

Jackson was confused. Why would she want to marry him? He didn’t even know her. Still he wanted blood for Amelia.
