"..." Althea opened her mouth and tried to speak but a lump on her throat was stopping her.
She was frozen solid at his words. It struck her speechless and she could feel herself standing on the edge of a steep cliff.

"Mom?" Kai must have sensed it. He touched the cold face of his mother before stroking it as if he was trying to comfort her. "I'm sorry. I know why you did that- Charlotte explained it to me that you were trying to-"
"No. You're right." Althea cut him off from his stuttering. "No matter what excuses I have- I still abandoned you."
