37. Breaking the Rules

Cassandra walked back to the living room, sat beside the young artist, observing the vivid colors she was applying on the canvas with the help of a flat tool. She felt her tense beside her, saw her hesitate just for a second before resuming her painting. Colorful trees full of life merged with a delicate sunset. It was mesmerizing, watching her.

She covered her knee with her hand, demanding her attention, “Don’t you trust me, Selena?” The tool trembled in her hand and she lowered it down. She inhaled and exhaled deeply, looking at the scraper in her hand, “I do… I really do.”

“Then answer me, kitten. Why did you run away from home?” Cassandra caressed her face, gazing into her eyes impassively. Selena chewed on her lower lips, “I…don’t like my parents.” “I need more than that, sweetheart.”

She flinched when the doctor pressed her thumb on the corner of her lips, “They’re…lawyers. My dad. My mom. My elder sister. My brother. They’re all lawyers.”
