For some time after Rael's death the surrounding parts of the city had been plunged into chaos after the 'stampede' had commenced. People were surging in every direction that would exit the main square screaming bloody murder as though the guards were following after them spear tips prodding them in the backs. They didn't know where they were running, but if there was an exit, and no guards near them it was good enough.
