I chose to ignore Glob's subtly mocking challenge and asked a question that had been nagging me since my earlier talks with Ulrik.
"How old are you exactly?"
He blinked in reaction to the abrupt change of subject, his sly smirk falling off his face.
"How is that relevant?" He questioned, leaning back in his deep seated,high-backed chair.
"That old,huh?"
He eyed me carefully and stroked his chin absently.
"Why do I feel as if I'm being mocked?"
I shrugged.
"Why don't you want to answer?"
"And what time is it? I haven't seen a clock since I've got here," Keanu interrupted.
"Reminds me of a casino,"
Wayne commented and Logan nodded in agreement, rubbing her stomach.
"I am two years short of seven hundred and in your world it would be half past eleven." Glob answered, prompting a brief, con
Electricity crackled and bounced off of Ulrik, thinning out like barbed wire to pull at his thick skin, sparking as it encircled him and pumping out blinding light.Keanu and I shaded our eyes as we watched him struggle to reach a now glowing Logan."Ulrik you must retreat! Her energy is too unstable, she has no control!" Glob called out over the din of wind, rain and clanging thunder.Keanu pulled me back and put his arm around me protectively-cue raging stomach butterflies-as Ulrik barred his teeth and tried to push farther. He appeared to be running in slow motion, his entire body sparking now, covered in strips of crackling white electricity."He might just be more stubborn than I am after all," I tilted my head as Ulrik seemed to lose his footing and go still, then resumed his strenuous effort. Keanu grunted noncommittally and shook water from his hair."Gives a new meaning to 'thic
Sadly,I don't think he was talking about a bunch of people in the throes of an orgy.I gripped both of his arms with both of mine and shook him slightly, looking into his alien red eyes."Who's coming Keen? Who?"His eyes were moving back and forth as if he was tracing something only he could see."The demonized creatures of the sky.We must greet them." He pulled out of my grip and stood off to my right, held his hands up,lifting his head and smiling as if in welcome.Oh hell naw.I backhanded him across the face.Slapped him right back from whatever looney bin he'd dived in."Jude, what the hell?!" He cupped his reddened cheek and though it looked like he was seriously thinking about returning the slap his eyes were his once more."Welcome back, you're welcome. Now what did you see?"He side eyed me a
The darkness above separated from the night and formed an enormous mass of moving, flapping black that was punctuated by red dots."What the hell..." Logan muttered."It's their eyes," Keanu answered her unfinished question.Ulrik chanted softly beside him and his purple aura grew and pulsated, his eyes now completely violet.Keanu broke away from the semi circle we had formed to grab a thick, jagged piece of wood that had broken from a small table. There were exposed nails sticking out of the jagged end so though it might be a crude, last ditched weapon,it looked pretty lethal. He came back to my side and we looked at eachother an instant before our attention was diverted to what was left of the roof. The enormous hole was now filled with dozens upon dozens of feathered creatures. They were motionless, leering at us with malevolent, red eyes and all but preventing the rain from streaming down;so closely together were they packed.I saw talons and hooked, pointed bea
A vivid image of my naked body sinuously sliding on top of his in a darkened room flitted through my mind but I ruthlessly pushed it away into a mental closet.I'd revisit that little tidbit during my next bath.In depth. For now,he needed me to keep us both from dying.I squeezed his hand and nodded then went around the beam while he slid to the floor and closed his eyes.Ulrik was backed into a corner with Logan at his side, her hair plastered to her skull and now only vaguely white. The axe that was once so intimidating was now splintered at their feet and Ulrik was shooting purple arcs that were barely keeping the feathered demons at bay.I cracked my knuckles.Tried to crack my neck and failed miserably.I took a step in their direction and I was immediately deterred by a swarm of bats aiming for my eyeballs. As if mine can help your blind asses to see.Or it could just be envy.Or it was their own dick game of
My eye lids felt as if they were laden with ten tonne weights and trying to open them seemed too much of an effort so I left them closed and enjoyed the heavy, comfortable feel of my body, the complete lack of pain.I'd always been unrepentantly lazy,so why change now?My head was woozy and thick,as if I were drugged, but that felt good too.If this is what being high is like then maybe I should try it.Shouldn't I be in pain though? Was I remembering correctly or did we not almost get eaten by evil birds but were then saved by cute unicorn looking, two butted cats?Maybe I should try harder to dislodge those ten tonne weights after all.I opened my palms and stretched my fingers. It was like pushing through mud, though I felt nothing at my fingertips.Maybe this high thing isn't all it's cracked up to be because nothing's
So it turns out that the lavishly appointed kitchen wasn't just for show and that though Glob was technically a king he didn't have anyone at his beck and call.Which meant breakfast was up to us.After showering in the tiny bathrooms off the side of the sickbay and changing into the clothes that magically appeared when we were carnage free,we all followed Glob through the labyrinth of passageways, corridors and opulent rooms until we arrived at the kitchen.Sunlight glinted off shiny steel appliances and warmed blonde wood. The picture window above the sink was framed with a thin, lacy curtain that shifted in the breeze and revealed a well tended vegetable garden, loaded fruit trees and a field beyond.Huh, you'd never guess that another room was painted and carpeted with guts, gore and excrement. But I digress.I took all his in at a glance then headed over to one of my favorite places ever.A gateway to my happy place. The pantry.
We wove through the idyllic garden and my mouth watered at the sight of the heavily laden fruit trees, some of which looked too exotic for me to identify.I had to remind myself that I'd just eaten but promised my belly we'd be back.I heard a snatch of muted conversation between Glob and Logan and dragged Keanu with me as I edged closer so we could eavesdrop."Being in Opa brings forth your abilities,as this is a land of energy and magic, where all your abilities were formed," Glob was saying and Logan pressed a hand to her stomach,as if she were feeling pain,or remembering it."So that's why it was so hard for me to control the lightening and keep it in?" She asked, looking up at him with her curls now brilliantly auburn in the sunlight."Yes and no.Your power and your ability to control it is tied up in your emotions so if you've been trying to suppress anything,if any feeling has been buried in your
When the world stopped spinning and we could walk without falling flat on our faces again we wound our way back through the knot of fruit trees and the vegetable garden then back in the house.Poor Logan was still nauseous and said she needed to lie down but wouldn't mind some company.Of course she stared right at me when she was saying this and added a very conspicuous lash fluttering but Wayne swooped in to the rescue and said he wouldn't mind staying with her for a while.Scheming Logan is more like it.She pouted in a way that made me wonder if she was really feeling ill or just trying to get me alone in a room.Thank heavens for Wayne. My hero.I'd always been a fan of batman.Glob and Ulrik wandered off, heads together like two guys lost in the throes of bromance.Wouldn't it be something though if holier than thou Ulrik preferred the
