“Hey man, how about some drinks tonight?” Jayden Molten, Christopher’s long time best friend said on the other side of the phone.
He was a senior doctor at the general hospital and he was not on call anymore for a few days so he thought of calling his buddy to go and have a few beers at skybar.
“Not today, I have to go home and see my wife. Single people like you wouldn’t understand.” Chris responded as he grabbed his laptop bag and left the office.
John who was sitting at his desk in the next room was dumbfounded. “Is he talking about the same wife he left alone yesterday and spent his night in the office lounge?” He mumbled to himself, wondering why his boss was acting weird.
“What? Rita? You finally got her? Congratulations bro!” Jayden said enthusiastically.
Chris frowned when he heard his friends excited tone so he corrected him. “You know clearly why I decided to marry her so don’t act all sentimental like I’m in a fairy tale and shit.”<
Rita came out of the bathroom with swollen eyes after crying her eyes out. While in the bathroom, the reality of her situation hit her hard. She lost everything including her dog! ‘How dare Eric sell my favorite sports car just like that with no remorse?’ Rita wondered if he was always this cruel or she just didn’t know him in the first place. She felt like a fool after falling for a person’s fake kindness. ‘The earlier I understand that not many kind people are genuine, the better for me.’ Rita thought to herself. Being thrown out of her own house had left her completely traumatized. It didn’t help that, instead of being comforted by her husband, she was scolded harshly instead. ‘How could he be so heartless?’ She grumbled to herself. Chris had not come back to the room so she got on the bed and curled up at the edge of the bed. Anyone who saw her would take pity on her for she looked pitiful. But the thoughts in her head were
Taking a deep audible breath, Rita picked up the untouched food and threw it in the trash can. Elizabeth had been watching the whole scene from the kitchen and she couldn’t help but feel bad for Rita. Walking over to Rita, she got the plate in Rita’s hand and patted her back. “Don’t take his words to heart Miss Jones. The master usually has a sharp tongue but he’s a kind man,” Elizabeth said, trying hard to comfort Rita. Rita just kept quiet feeling resentful. ‘How dare he.. I put in a lot of effort, the least he could do is say thank you and tell me to do better but he trampled upon my efforts like it’s nothing. What a dick!!’ She thought to herself, seething inwardly as she thought of how she will get her revenge in the future. ‘You’re so dead Chris!’ She mumbled in her mind resentfully. Elizabeth thought Rita was sad because Chris didn’t like her food so she suggested. “How about I teach you some basic stuff? If you cook something n
A few minutes later, Chris entered a 24hour convenience store and walked towards the women’s section. Looking at the different brands on the shelves, he did not know which one was ideal. He took out his phone but put it back when he remembered Rita had no phone. He awkwardly read through a few brands which left him utterly confused. ‘What does with wings and with no wings mean?’ he mumbled inwardly scratching his neck. “Need any help sir?” A soft voice spoke from the side snapping Chris out of his trance. “No!” Chris remarked. It was already embarrassing that he had come to buy such a thing so he wouldn’t embarrass himself further by seeking help. Picking one of each brand and ignoring the admiring glances from women, he quickly paid and rushed out of the store. “Wow.. who ever she is.. she’s lucky!” The sales lady shouted after Chris who had already entered his car and drove away. On his way back home, Chris dialed his assista
Chris massaged the bridge of his nose, feeling his head ache. He did not know when he had agreed to marry Lydia but suddenly she shows up saying they will get married this year. “Chris? I came to pick you up so that I can choose my wedding dress.” Lydia said and Chris just looked at her helplessly. ‘I already have a wife ok?’ He thought inwardly as irritation flashed through him. Chris’s mother had really gone overboard this time. She had one-sidedly promised Lydia marriage before he left for greener pastures years ago. His mother did not tell him anything until weeks ago when he returned to suddenly find he had a ‘fiancée’ waiting for him. Chris immediately declined and told his mother that he had someone else in his heart. He recalled the day they had argued about it. ~Flashback 4 weeks ago~ “Chris, I’m warning you. I hope it’s not that haughty girl that you still have your sight on. Didn’t she break you enough? The letter sh
Bang! “What the…” Chris trailed his words when he saw Rita at the door, ready to blow her top. She approached his desk while glaring at him and her chest heaved up and down due to anger. “Why the fuck did you ask companies to shun me? Christopher Stevens what the hell are you up to?” Rita hissed. “Hello to you too.” Chris muttered with a cocky smirk. Irritation flashed through Rita and she felt like strangling Chris. ‘How dare he..’ “I don’t know what you are talking about.” Chris said as he stood up and walked around the table to stand face to face with Rita. “Oh please, cut the charade. I was told it was you. Honestly, I never thought you could be so despicable!!!” Rita shouted, her cheeks were puffed up due to anger and Chris thought she looked adorable. When Chris didn’t respond, Rita became more angry. “What’s your intention huh? To keep me as your caged little bird? What are you so afraid of hmmm? That if I get a
“What’s happening here?” The restaurant manager came forward and questioned. People in the restaurant just stared at them in amusement. Of course they wouldn’t lose the opportunity to watch some drama. Life was boring after all. Rita’s heart raced when she saw the huge manager. Rushing to the unconscious man, she tugged at his sleeve to see if he was awake. She pressed two of her fingers together and placed them on his neck to check his pulse. Suddenly, she was yanked away from the man and came face to face with Chris who had bloodshot eyes. “Don’t you dare touch another man!!” He roared, anger evident in his voice as he gritted his teeth. The sight of Rita’s smooth hands touching that disgusting man irked him. Strangely he wanted to be the only one she touched. Even though he knew that he was treading a dangerous path, he couldn’t help but get drawn to it like a moth is drawn to a flame. Chris’s harsh voice startled Rita and she trembled slig
A few hours had passed and Chris was beginning to get antsy. He had expected Rita to barge into his office to demand an explanation for why he had given her such a job. But according to John, she was working in silence, not looking angry at all. Chris grabbed his phone and texted John. Chris: How’s it going? John: It’s going fine sir. Madam seems to have adjusted already. Chris furrowed his brow at the response. He texted back. Chris: Does she look angry? John: No sir… she’s smiling occasionally. Chris sighed and put his phone back on the table, pinching the bridge of his nose. He never expected the spoilt princess to be so headstrong. He only wanted to humble her. Back then, she had said he was out of her league. Yet, ten years later, she had become an assistant to the man she scorned for not having a bright future. She had become a little worm that he could easily squish with his hands. Chris had worked extra hard because of this. Because he wanted to show her that you don’
Rita kept looking at the clock on the wall, feeling anxious. Her heart was racing in excitement. She didn’t know whether it was because she would be going to an event, or it was because she’d be spending time with Chris. She was no fool.. she knew what the flutters in her stomach or the tingles coursing through her when Chris was in close proximity meant. It was totally confusing. She thought she loved Eric. After all, he’s all she’s ever dated ever since she came of age. Rita had to learn to love Eric in the past after seeing his efforts. He was a hopeless romantic. He would surprise her with flowers and gifts by her room’s doorstep back in the university. When she was once admitted in the hospital for dehydration, he had secretly entered her room and placed a humidifier and some flowers in the ward for her to be comfortable. Although Eric would pretend like he didn’t know what Rita was talking about when she thanked him for the surprises.
