Chapter 44: Time to say goodbye
Two days later, the ceremony for Katie's passing was underway. Because it had to be held in the temple, I wasn't sure if I would be allowed to attend. I had begged Katie’s parents to make an exception, to allow me to say a proper goodbye. They reluctantly agreed to discuss this with the elders.
On the morning of the ceremony, I paced around the healing ward with Leala Fey in my arms, awaiting the verdict. After what felt like ages, Elise, Katie's mother, walked up to me. I bowed my head to show her respect.
“It has been decided. You will be allowed to attend the temple this one time.”
“Thank you,” I said with a smile.
Elise stared at me with a pinched expression. “It’s what Katie would have wanted.” She turned and started walking away.

Cassie and I spent some time just being close to each other after the others had left. Having her remembering her past life helped, and she forgave me for not telling her I was a demon. After living through Katie's life, she understood why I had been so reluctant in telling her. She also realised that I'm not a typical demon, like the ones she read about, and that I would do anything for her. I was happy to have Cassie back, but I didn't want to push it. Cassie wasn't Katie, even though she technically was. I made the guest room into Cassie's room so that she didn't need to feel like I was pressuring her. I teleported us back to the house, but when we got there, the house was empty. Adrenalin rushed into my body and I jumped when Leah placed her hands on my shoulders. She gazed into my eyes. “Calm down. The wolves wouldn’t have wanted to come inside.” I closed my eyes and nodded my head. She was right. I followed Leah out to the back garden. There were still no signs of Cassie or the wolves. A repetitive banging rang in my ears and I rushed towards it. Leah followed behind. It led us into the forest and to the edge of the estate. Several people were there, which I assumed to be wolves. Most of them were wearing nothing more than a pair of trousers, despite the chilly weather. When we got closer, they turned and stared at us. I could hear continuous growls coming from several of them, which stopped me in my tracks.

I enjoyed my flight, knowing that Cassie was safe in my house with Leah protecting her. It made me feel less worried, especially after the defensive display of magic that Leah had manifested by instinct when we were sparring. I knew she still felt bad about it, but in all honesty, it was nothing. If I had been prepared for it, I would have been able to deflect it. My fighting skills went way beyond some elemental magic. There had been a war in the supernatural community. Freya had tried to solve it in a peaceful way for many centuries. She was a strong believer that everyone, no matter their origin, should be able to co-exist and live peacefully amongst each other, and amongst humans if we so wished. When we got to the house, I left Leah with Sky to go and check on Cassie. I was excited to tell her what we had discovered. As I made my way over to the cabin the sky had started to brighten, given way for a new dawn. I woke up to the smell of food sometime in the late afternoon. After I walked downstairs, I found Cassie and Sky cooking dinner. I stood at a distance and watched them for a while. It looked like Cassie was teaching Sky how to make pancakes. After we had eaten, Sky asked for a scrying bowl. "I thought you didn't have any magic?" She gave me a sad smile. "I don't, but I promised Leaf I would let her know that we had arrived safely." I gave her an understanding look. “I’m sorry I wont be able to help you. I don’t have the ability to scry.” Cassie perked up. “But I do.” she pressed her lips together, a slight blush on her cheeks. “It’s very new, so I don't know if I will be able to get it to work, but I'm willing to give it a go."
