Chapter 7

Freya

“I can’t guarantee that it will work, but I will do everything I can to get you out of here with me.” Cali uttered from her cage once the room was empty, and I offered a small smile, if money was truly all these guys cared about then there was a chance it would work, or at least it would if there was even the smallest shred of honour in the men, but I doubted it, I wasn’t holding out much hope, that was for sure.

The room fell back into silence as I listened out for the men waiting patiently for them to come back although I found myself unable to sit still. Finally, after close to six months I was getting my wish. I was getting a look at the man behind the door.

I closed my eyes and tried to bring up his image in my head, it was fuzzy, bits were missing. Each of the other men I could picture with perfect clarity, and it was frustrating, this man was the one that meant the most because he was the one that would lead me to the shark on the next rung up the ladder, his own boss.

Eventually the men came back into the room. I didn’t pay too much attention to the words spoken, they were talking about calling this Damian guy, so it wasn’t anything I would be able to use later on but I could use the image of this man burned into my mind so again I focused taking in every inch, the scratch on his cheek the twitch of his eye, his bitten fingernails and smooth hands.

I paid a little more attention when the phone was held out for Cali to speak and wondered what she would say, the voice on the cell came through loud and clear in the otherwise silent room and the man sounded like sex on legs, his voice deep and smooth and I mentally congratulated the girl in the other cage, if the guy looked anything like he sounded then he was a beast, I couldn’t imagine that voice belonging to a skinny spotty kid, nope he was all man.

But then that was the advantage of being in a pack, there wasn’t an awful lot of choice amongst the rogues, it wasn’t like many of the were decent and the ones that were tended to look like they had been hit in the face with a shovel.

I shook the thought of and focused my attention back on my target while Cali tried to negotiate for her own freedom. I was still sceptical that it would work, these were the kind of guys that would take the money then kill her. I would warn her later once I had a better idea of how things were going to play out. The girl needed to watch her back.

Eventually the men left the room and I turned my attention to a hopeful looking Cali. “Do you think it will work?” I whispered as quietly as I could, unsure where the men were in the cabin and not wanting them to overhear. As silence enveloped us again. Its not like there was anything else to talk about. The usual girl chat of boys and movies and music was lost on me, they weren’t things I had living mostly in the wild and besides that they were nothing but reminders of the freedom we didn’t have.

A noise in the room had my eyes spinning back to the other girl and noting the panic on her face I leant forward. “What’s going on?”

She seemed to hesitate before speaking “They aren’t planning on handing me over to my pack, they have already sold me.” She stated before pausing and I felt a renewed sense of anger for the arseholes that thought they had the right. “I need to get us out of here tonight.” She uttered before scanning the room and I almost laughed, never mind the room we couldn’t even get out of the cages.

“How? We can’t even get out of the cages.” I verbalised the thought.

“The cages aren’t a problem, I can handle that easily enough, it’s what comes after that. That’s the concern. Do you have any idea where we are?” she stated and I frowned how the hell could she get us out, I had been trying for weeks. But I played along and answered her question.

“No, we were moved here about a month ago when one of the girls escaped from the last place. After that they started keeping all the girls in cages. We were blindfolded when we were brought here so I didn’t see anything, but I think there is a river or lake nearby, one of the men talks about going fishing sometimes.”

“Do you know what this cabin looks like outside of this room?” I shook my head at that one.

“Okay, what about at night, are there always guards here?” she asked, the questions coming thick and fast but still o frowned how the hell was she getting us out of the cages. Was this even a possibility? And after everything, why the hell was I even considering letting another girl try to escape.

“The scruffy man is always here, sometimes I can hear him snoring at night, I don’t think anyone else is here at night usually.” The words were out of my mouth before I really thought about them.

“Okay, once he’s asleep we are going to make a break for it. I can get us out of the cages.” She informed “We are going to have to try and go out through the window she indicate the window and I wondered if it would even open.

Besides it was irrelevant there was no way she would be able to break open the cage.

Neither of us uttered a word as the minutes passed while we waited for the sound of snoring from the other room. Eventually a small rumble sounded, and I looked at Cali, her eyes filled with excitement and knew she had heard it too.

I watched as she started at the bars of the cage and nearly laughed again as I considered the girl might be crazy, what was she planning to do, will it open? If that worked, I would have been out of here a long time ago. But the thought died in my head as her eyes changed, only they didn’t change to the usual bright blue I was accustomed to, no, her eyes were a bright dancing, fire orange. A gasp escaped my lips as fire danced across the skin of her hand and I watched as she heated the metal, before simply pushing it opened. The whole thing had taken less than a minute and she hadn’t made a sound.

Holy shit. What the fuck just happened?

The tiny girl from Blackrock had just created flames on her skin and melted metal. No way was she just a shifter. Thoughts ran through my head a mile a minute, I had never even heard of such a thing, and I wondered what she was, a different race? A variant? A hybrid? But I forced the thoughts away. Right now the only this that mattered was that the girl was opening my cage. Holy shit we were out.
