Chapter 135

Michael lay on his bed, desperate to find some semblance of sleep. But no matter how hard he tried, an unsettling feeling gnawed at him. His tired eyes shifted to Evelyn, peacefully slumbering beside him.

Finally, he couldn't bear the restlessness any longer. Rising from the bed, Michael ventured to his drawer and retrieved a sleeping pill. Only hours before, he had implored Linc for this remedy, a whispered plea for respite.

It was the fourth time and the twelfth pill he was taking this evening, a reckless disregard for the consequences.

None of it mattered, though, because the drugs simply weren't working.

Leaving the room in a hazy daze, Michael navigated his way to the study. Discreetly tucked away behind an array of bookshelves, a hidden safe beckoned to him. Retrieving a file, he carefully opened it, poring over its contents once more.

With a nod of affirmation, he murmured,

"I made the right choice," before returning it to its secrecy.
