Words failed me as Kai waited for me to speak. Even though my first instinct was to tell him no, I couldn't because I knew what I stood to lose. It seemed Kai was willing to agree to the party as long as I did his bidding. But what exactly did he want? And how do I know he wouldn't make an outrageous request?

Kai bobbed his bushy eyebrows at me. His stare asking, "What will it be, Winter?"

Finally, I found my tongue. "Yes, I will do whatever you ask."

He clapped all of a sudden. "Good! Now that I have your word, you can go ahead and throw your daughter a big party. If you like, you could even use a party planner."

The approval didn't brighten my mood like I thought it would. Even after Kai waved to dismiss me, I stood still and asked, "Aren't you going to tell me what you want?"

He tapped his chin before shaking his head. "Nah, not yet. I'll tell you when the time is right."
