"Did you see that he begged for mercy with your own eyes?" John asked.

"I didn't."

"That's it. Henry must've found a recording to deceive you. Furthermore, why didn't you ask Mr. Truman about it if you believed Henry? You'd have known the truth when you compared their stories," John said rhetorically.

"I thought about it, but Mr. Truman was clearly lying. Wouldn't it be embarrassing for him if I exposed him?" Lydia asked.

She had another concern, too. Henry had asked her not to tell anyone about the situation, and sharing with her family was already a clear violation of his instructions.

She was not sure what trouble Henry would get into if she told Peter about it. Furthermore, she was unsure what Peter would do in anger and humiliation if he were exposed as a liar.
