“It is better if I start at the beginning.” Dominic settled onto the sofa in my office after we went to my office to talk.

“Okay.” I sat beside him on the couch, crossing my legs under me.

“As you know, I first came to your house when I was seventeen. I had met Lexi around the same time. My father found that her adoptive parents might be connected to the death of my mother, so he helped me attend the college she was accepted to.”

“Maria told me your mother died in a car accident by a drunk driver.” I interrupted.

“That is the story that we tell everyone else. Since you know the truth about my mother, I can tell you what really happened.” Dominic turned toward me, resting his arm on the couch's back. “It is true she was in a car accident, except it hadn’t been an accident. Lily’s adoptive parents had run us off the road and beat her until she died.”

My blood ran cold at hearing what happened. “So, you got close to Lexi because of that?” I urged him to continue.

“When I first me
