Her silence annoyed him, can't she just answer his question with a yes or a no. He asked seriously, "Why can't you just answer me? Are you sad that I am leaving?"

Since she had been with him this was the second time he was using this serious tone towards her, first time being the time when he first asked her to be his girlfriend. His eyes spoke of immense confusion and anxiety, as if her answer was the verdict which would predict his life and death. Moved by his seriousness she dared not to piss him off.
