Chapter 22: The Elder's Church

The sun shone through my bedroom window the following morning, casting a light behind my eyes. I didn't want to wake—what if it had all been some dark and sensual dream? I don't know whether I'd be relieved because it would make things less complicated or if I'd be disappointed because it would make things more complicated.

I lay still with my eyes shut, letting the sounds of the birds outside cascade in through the slightly open window when suddenly, my phone suddenly rang.

I let it go for a minute when I heard a groggy, deep voice next to me speak. "You want to get that?"

I opened my eyes—so I hadn't been dreaming. My heart was ecstatic; my head, on the other hand, was in complete disarray.

I reached over to my nightstand and grabbed my phone. The screen showed the contact symbol for Kindred, and I sighed before rejecting the call and setting it back down.

"Everything ok?" Leon asked, turning his head to face me.

His usually combed-back hair was tousled into its natural form,
