As we reached the car parked outside, I saw the tension in Kaine’s face. I knew he was trying to keep a watchful eye on Darren while also gauging my reactions.

I decided to play along, to ease any suspicions he might have. I touched his arm gently and gave him a reassuring smile. “Kaine, I know this situation is strange, but we’re in this together. Let’s stay focused on the mission and figure out what’s really going on.”
