“What are you doing here without me?” Jasper asked, raising his brows at me and shifting his gaze between me and Detective Johnson.

“Oh, I wanted to get some new information on the case. I thought you would be a little busy,” I made an excuse, but it was obvious to Jasper that I was lying.

“You know I will never be too busy to get new information on my mother’s case. Did you come here to report something that you just found out?” He stepped forward, standing directly in front of me.

“She didn’t, Mr. Hayes. You know that we wouldn’t find a new development without telling you about it. You’re her son, one of her two closest relatives,” Detective Johnson stepped in with a smile, helping me out of the money situation.

“I think I should head out now,” I said, side stepping him and starting to walk away from him when he held me by the hand, causing me to stop.

“Why don’t we just go together?” he offered.

“I’m going to see my mother,” I responded, wringing my arm out of his grip.
