Chapter 2: A Beta's Heart

So I guess this is it. Game on.

I stepped out of Riley’s car, ready to spring into action when my body went rigid when his scent hit me.

My mate's scent.

It was stronger than the first time I smelt him. He smelled of cedarwood and mint. It was intoxicating, and despite the smell of blood mixed with the disgusting smell of rogues, I found myself getting aroused.

My eyes scanned the area while keeping my guards up, and then I found him. In his wolf form. No wonder his scent was too strong.

He didn't notice me, but I didn't mind as I watched him in awe. Time stood still and I forgot I was in the middle of the battlefield.

The dark-grey wolf I was watching was skillfully maneuvering his body to counter the rogue attack. He was moving flawlessly, and I couldn't stop my heart from palpitating. He was... he was too perfect. Or at least his wolf was.

I snapped back from my trance the moment I saw one rogue wolf launching in the air with his fangs out in the direction of my mate. My reflexes were faster than my mind, and I just found myself reaching for my dagger and throwing it in the wolf's direction, hitting him in the soft spot on his neck where I wanted it to be.

His body dropped to the ground with a loud thud, and I couldn't help the smug grin curling onto my lips. That was a perfect hit.

I reached for the next dagger when I saw the same rogue attempting to stand up. I threw the dagger without any hitch, hitting him in between his eyes.

I guess years of thorough practice really paid off.

I brushed my hands against each other without taking my gaze off my mate and his surroundings. I wanted to make sure he was safe.

I was baffled as to why it took him so long to turn around. Was he a baby wolf and couldn't smell me?

I didn't think so. I could smell his aura. Not an Alpha but a strong one. A Beta or a Gamma.

I was already tempted to call on him when his wolf suddenly turned around, and I just found myself looking at the most beautiful wolf I've ever seen.

I was about to smile at him when I remembered the reason I spent three years, from one training camp to another, mastering the art of combat: because he abandoned me.

I swallowed the invisible lump in my throat as I watched him watch me through his wolf's eyes. I wondered if he was attracted to me because I was. I didn't even know what he looked like, but I could feel the wetness in between my thighs.

For Goddess's sake, Alba, there were rogues everywhere and you're feeling horny?

We stared at each other for what felt like an eternity, but it was just probably a few split seconds, and then I saw his wolf leap into the air as my eyes widened.

The next thing I knew, his paws were caging my body into a protective embrace as we rolled in the air and landed on the ground with a loud thud.

Sparks and tingles were shooting through my body, settling in my core.

Fuck! He saved me from being attacked before one of their men intercepted the rogue who was aiming for me, but I wasn't even thinking of the danger I was in.

All I was thinking was that he needed to shift into his human form so he could press his manhood into my aching core to pacify the desire burning in my body.

"Alba!" Riley's voice echoed around us as he turned in my direction and glared at me.

He must have seen me drop to the ground with this cute wolf hugging me.

"I'm okay! Don't mind me!" I raised one hand and waved at him. He growled once more before turning his attention back to the enemies.

I giggled before I shifted my eyes back to my mate. His beautiful wolf eyes were boring deep into mine as he started licking my face.

It tickled me so that I started giggling a bit louder until I felt his wolf's body go rigid. And then he shifted back into his human form almost immediately, and my eyes widened in utter shock.

Hovering over my body was the most handsome man I've ever laid my eyes on.

My lips parted. I wanted to say hi, but nothing came out of my throat. And then my eyes met his piercing deep blue eyes.

I felt the mate bond snap into place and everything just stopped. I ceased to hear the commotion around us, as the only thing I was hearing was the sound of our hearts beating in perfect rhythm. My emotions were all over the place. I wanted nothing more than to scoot into his arms and smell his addicting scent.

I found myself just gazing in awe at him.

His mouth tugged into a smug smirk, contouring his perfect chiseled jaw as I attempted to clamp my thighs together to stop the tingles and sparks from making me wet, only to realize that his legs were caught in between mine.

"Hi! I'm Paul. Nice to meet you, mate." He winked at me as he rose to his feet before pulling me up with him. He was not even bothered that he was completely naked and I couldn't stop my eyes from darting downward.

Shit! That is one fucking big dick down there.

"Eyes up here, mate! Enemies are on the air!" He chuckled as he pulled my hand to swing me to the right. I glided flawlessly into the air and sent out a strong kick to the wolf along the way.

We were fighting together in such perfect sync that no one would even guess that we had never done this together before.
